...strip a bike that is!

Breaking my posting cherrie, been a guest for a while and am now looking at buying a Buell so a first hello to all.

I'm really keen on joining the Buells owner club, I've been through the "rice rocket" phase already to now know that i couldn't really give a damn about 1/4mile times(not saying Buells are slow just saying I don't want a straight line rocket). I live in the UK and even though I've had insurance for a bike for the last 4 years, the cost to insure a 12 are astronomical, equivilent to $1000 for 3rd party/fire/theft, ok ok, i've had a few claims recently. So finaly, here's my question to all you Buellers, if a bloke wants a 9 instead of a 12 due to insurance cost, but really likes the darker frame of the 12, how long will it take to strip a 9 to it's utter nakedness so that he could powder coat frame/swingarm? I'm no mechanic but i am quite able with a spanner and have the confidence that i can do the strip down, just not sure on the amount of time needed to strip one of these babies down and then assemble them again? Would you advise against someone who has only ever worked on bikes but never taken a motor out to try this project out? And yes i know what you're probably thinking at this moment, just by a 12, but the other factor here is if i buy a 12 then there's less for me to fiddle with and hence no reason to strip....i want to put my stamp on the bike. I'm going to go for a look similar to this, and damn does this look fine.

Hope the pic shows up, I've never used photobucket until right now.

cheers

Took me about 3 hrs to strip my bike down to the engine and swingarm. Buells engineered the bike to make sense so not a lot of tools are needed and nothing special is required just the basics.

cheers, but what about dropping the engine out the frame, would i need a pulley/mobi-jack at all? Or just some heavy man power? Has anyone here powder coated a frame before, just want to know what the finish was like and if the powder coating is the best method as far as durability of the finish goes? To be honest i don't know to much about spraying a frame..

I have bike stands and just used a jack. Some muscle is required unless you have an engine lift.

I dont see why the 12 would be that much more expensive than the 9 insurance wise, but hey im not from the UK [confused] not sure how different it is from the US

Or find a 09 xb9 with the black frame and you will be fine just have to do the front fairing switch. As for the strip down I don't see it being a problem at all but to put it back together ok then this is always a bit more difficult.
