ok so i ordered my ECMspy cable a few days ago so i could start tuning the bike. it is using wayy more gas than it should be (averaging about 36mpg w/out beating on it) and in the mean time, i have been reading lots on a TPS reset. is there a reason that you reset the TPS? will the bike not run without it? or just not run well? all i have on the bike is a D&D exhaust and a K&N filter. i know that the bike is running too rich because it never back fires, but the exhaust smells horrible and it seems to dump some black (unburnt fuel) smoke out the exhaust. HELP!

The TPS on any bike OR Vehicle is important for the Engine to idle properly/start and accelerate.Make sure to read up on the Forum here before you change something in the ECM.
Just resetting Throttle Position Sensor so you can get the Bikes Engine to Idle and Run properly is a Step in the right Direction. The Degrees of Twisting the Throttle along with the Ecm controling fuel delivery and information being read is probably the most important thing. that is the easiest way I can explain it for not getting all tech. like. There are manuals at the top of the page here on the forum. Always Save your prior ECM program on to your computer before you Change anything in the ECM.
IF all you want ECM Spy for is [TPS resetting] and diagnostics then It is a Great Tool for that as well. ECMSPY is a powerful Tuner tool and CAN do anything to the ECM including Bricking it to no function at all & that is not reverseable) .
Check out Daves DIY videos all in one thread. HERE on the Forum to get an Idea of how to do some areas. Also check out the Tuniversity to learn the better way of Individually tuning your ECM to the Changes made to your machine. Take your time. Welcome to the Forum. *Jimi

is your CEL on? any codes stored? plugs fouling? air temp switch under air box base unplugged? mild gentle riding and 36mpg along with raw fuel aroma usually add up to way overly rich condition and you say you're running aftermarket exhaust and K&N which should be very lean to the point of rideability problems. something amiss there.

well, the plugs were fouled at the dealer and they put new ones in. the weather will probably be crappy here tomorrow so im going to pull my plugs in the garage to the soundtrack of a nice thunderstorm and see how they look after about 300mi on the new plugs. the mpgs actually were much better. i rode around town to school and such and averaged 55.9mpg and i just went on a 140mi ride with my dad on friday and i averaged 58mpg. i think the stealership lied when they said they "filled" the tank. probably just splashed a little bit of new gas in there to make it run better. the bike has this really weird hesitation feeling when riding at very low speeds (like under 20mph) like it almost stutters and the throttle (while tight) doesnt want to give any gas to the bike until its about 5mm engaged. im guessing that THIS has a lot to do with the TPS reset too. im just going to reset the TPS tomorrow when my cable and software get here and see how she runs from there. the dealer changed the spark plugs and oil so im guessing they DIDNT reset the TPS after hearing how much they charge to do it.

How much has your MPG improved? I also average about 36/37 MPG with a Hawk exhaust, K&N filter and the EBR race ECM. I have not replaced my stock plugs but have a feeling it will definitely help.

so yesterday i reset the TPS and AFV and loaded the race tune on my ECM as well. i used to have this really bad hesitation like shakey feeling at low speeds (anything under 15-20mph) and after doing these three things, it now runs smooth as butter! i am at 130mi right now and the fuel light still hasnt come on so i want to wait for that until i fill it and get a NEW MPG rating, but i will let you guys know as soon as i am finished. i also went on a 100mi 70mph expressway ride last friday with my dad so that might throw off my MPGs a little bit (since i dont usually do much highway riding, my MPGs might be a tad on the high side). the bike is running like a champ now! just need to order some NGKs after this next paycheck and ill be set for a while :)

ALSO: after the TPS reset, the bike now literally doesn't even crank to start the engine. i just touch the starter switch and it immediately fires right up!
