Transfering XB12S into CA

Hello Buellers. This is my first post as a new Buell owner. I just sold my Kawasaki ZX6R and decided that a Lightning 12S was the way to go for me. Found one in MN that was exactly what the Dr ordered. 2005 Black, 1500 miles, and a great price in comparison to what else I was finding out there.

To get to my question, I live in CA and we have some strict laws about bringing in vehicles that are not certified. The bike is stock as of now. Does anyone know if this will be an issue?

Also, does anyone have a suggestion for shipping? I have read some horror stories and am hoping to get some feedback from experiences out there.

The only help that I can offer is that CA vehicles have an additional canister on the bike to account for the state's strict EPA requirements.

I can't tell you if you'll have to modify the bike so that it bears one of those, though I'd imagine you would have to. I'm moving back to CA soon, and having reviewed the laws, it appears that you would need to have purchased the vehicle as a non-CA resident to bring it in without any adjustments (or any mileage requirements). I know that otherwise, the motorcycles must have 7k on the clock (or something like it) before they can be registered in CA.

So how easy is it to turn a ODO from 1500 up to 7500 to get this Buell into CA? Any ideas???

ride it for 6000 miles. Thats the only legal way to do that.

Buy another gauge cluster with over 7500 miles on it. My friend did it before. It's no big deal at all. ODO fraud yes, but I'm not telling anyone.

Usually ODO fraud goes in the other direction though lol... I still vote road trip... no fraud AND you get to ride your bike for those missing miles [up][up][up]

So if I bought a 2007 cluster and the bike it came off of had 8k on it, would the gauge read 8000? Looks like these have digital gauges.


I am told that if brought into the state and you bring it to the DMV without proper mileage that the vin will be black flagged and you cannot EVER register it.

I would not do all that. What you could do though maybe is work out a deal with the guy your buying it from to stay registered in his state then once you get the 7500 miles you need then transfer it to California

I've seen a DMV refferee wave this off before. My work friend did this last year with a 2008 triumph. He was glad he went the legal route.
There was a stamped/embossed document from the ref that allowed him to register the bike.



I've been told that the DMV reffs don't have rules to follow, they have "guidlines" which gives them a LOT of personal freedom to judge your issue.

It pays to be very prepared before you go and you should be humble and polite.

You may still get declined. This is a fact of life in Ca. Which DMV you go to makes the biggest difference too. I think smaller DMV offices are easier to navigate with this stuff.

Maybe you can talk to some kit car guys and find a reff that they seem to get a lot done with. Kit car builders have a real battle sometimes with the DMV and thus have the experience to help.

This is kind of a big gamble. If I spends $5+ grand and haev it shipped, they could black flag the bike. Not sure if I could do it.

Next, I don't think I could physically ride 6,000 miles in the 10? day limit that the state gives you to register it.

Any other ways around this? Other than buy a bike in CA. I really can't find one that isn't ridicualously priced. Saw a 9 with 10k miles for $7000.

I use the sacramento and SF lists for my Ulysses search. Since I'm looking for an XB12X I'm seeing shit tons of XB9 bikes.

So here is another thought...
What if I just happened to add another 1 in front of the 1500 on the title when I bring it in for registration? Are they going to physically check the ODO? Am I gonna get clipped?
I have been on hold with DMV for 15 minutes.
