What transmission fluid does everyone use in their xb9's and/or what do you recommend?

SYN-3 is the full-synthetic choice from the dealer. I've been using it since i bought the bike with 6 miles on it. So far with almost 7,500 miles on it (and being changed every 2,500 miles) i've had not a problem with it yet.

SYN-3 can be used as engine oil and primary & transmission fluid..

You're changing your tranny fluid every 2500 miles? That's a bit overkill isn't it?

you might also consider motul 20-50 synthetic trans fluid, belray #80 trans fluid, or silkolene red syn. trans fluid. though i put either mobil 1 v-twin synthetic 20-50 or the same from castrol act-evo, the motul, belray, and silkolene lubes are fabulous. all designed for primaries, trans, and wet clutch.

jmill25 what mileage are you going to maintain the Fluids 2500/3500,if you want to only change it at Say 3500, you can use in the Primary only- Redline, or I use Amsoil 20/50 here in my shop and some oil schoolers like to bring their own OR some of the older bikes need different. NOW in my bikes I use Redline in my race bike 2009 XB 12R- and my Street 08/XB12R- Amsoil 75/90 full syn.,gear oil,3/4 of a quart, measured. Then Lucas stabilizer to top it off for ONE FULL quart. I don't get the hard clunking that a lot of the Buells do or the Bigger bikes that make the Horrible CLUNK, when shifting seems to really soften it down. Also Depends on the amount of wear(mileage)when you start using these products. It cost a little more but cheaper in the long run. Especially the repair areas. THE Engine I use 20/50 Amsoil- OR you can use 50w Castrol Syntec. I have an 2006 RC 51 that just loves the Syntec It's a V Twin as well and much Higher Revs. So far no problems on any of the bikes I own. Most of our Customers are a little squmish on some of the Newer products, so I just do the normal with them, and get them out the door. After all I do need the work! Opps did I Type that out loud.Try not to GO over 3500/miles at least on the Primary & Engine the Temperature is at times above 300 degrees and More. It Fries the primary fluid NO cooler for it .There are other choices as well. Maintain your bike and it should be fine.~Jimi [cool][up]

I meant oil changed every 2,500... primary & transmission as scheduled per buell manual

mobile one 20-50 v twin.
Plan on trying some Amsoil since they sponser EBR soon as i finish the case of mobile one off.
I do engine every 3-4k and trans/primary every other

anything to avoid that dreaded neutral to first gear clunk. i hate that on these transmissions though the oldtimers tell me to shut up and ride it. LOL:D

Thanks btw guys, I ended up going with a brand called redline I believe, haven't got the bike back together tho to test it, having issues with a spark plug change before I left for vacation, seems like the last owner messed up the threads, hopefully when I get back I can get them cleaned out with a thread chaser and get em back on the road, not to mention replace the screws from the transmission cover plate there, because the last owner also stripped out a bunch of bolts heads.

First gear is a straight cut gear, thats why you always slam into it, nothing can be done about it.

I think all 5 gears are spur cut gears. As far as i know every sequential transmission is. And i wouldn't use any oil that VW uses.

Oh hey jimijeans never replied to you, thanks for the info me and the ol man decided on redline, seemed to be quality. And no worries on taking care of the bike this isn't my first rodeo, just my first on a Buell ;) haha I'm a stickler for changing things earlier rather than later

i have a 2003 buell xb9s what redline oil do i use in the primary since it has a wet clutch/and trans gears using the same oil/?i called redline syn. they said to use there 75/80 gear oil but what bout the clutch/gear oil isnt meant for a wet clutch./i dont like how the clutch feels thats y im changing to redline. i have that castrol V-twin syn/ that does all 3 chain engine trans/but in the gearbox/chaincase im not impressed. help me out here please bike has only 8k on it

if you insist on using redline then you would want to use their 20-50 motorcycle specific oil in your trans/primary. it's designed for this application and for wet clutches. don't know who you talked to at redline but i would not use their 75/80 gear oil in an XB primary/trans. just my opinion. trust me when i tell you that i've tried about every lube known to mankind in XB primaries and to this day still find that Amsoil 20/50 cycle oil consistently performs the best. again....IMO.

I use Mobile 1 20W-50 V-Twin in both holes because it is the most expensive oil. I refresh oil in both holes every 5000 miles. But oil in the transmission cavity can be refreshed every 10000 miles.
