Today i was heading to put my bike into storage and something strange started happening. When i first started riding i was at a stop light and when i started letting off the clutch the bike made a poof noise and the rpms droped as it was almost about to die. It did it again at the next stop light. Then i headed onto the interstate during rush. Traffic started to come to a crawl and i started to down shift (to second or first idk it happened so fast) and instantly the bike made a horible griding noise. i immediately tried to up shift and it was extreamly hard i got it into a gear and road it all the way home. When i was home i tried running threw the gears and it was very hard to shift and it was very difficult to shift to first and second neutral took a long time and alot of effert to find. Please try to help me try to ideas to fix!!!

Check both clutch adjustments (one @ Lever, and the other @ Primary) as well as the above. All can be found in the free service manuals you can download via the link at the top of the page. Post back up if you still have problems.

Check out THE Links Stevenc 150 has AND if your a visual type. Daves DIY videos all in one thread. Both are good to go by on different subjects. The primary chain adj., is on the bottom of the bike tranny CASE. Allen wrench to adjust chain.and box end wrench to break loose lock nut. 1st, get the bike close to level.2nd remove the small cover 2 bolts,(wait till you see the primary chain w/cover off & check for slack.)I always wait till its cold. Check the manual for a visual at top of this page. THIS is important to do !There is a 3 bolt cover as well (thats for the clutch adjustment.)Check the chain 1st. BTW is there any slack up in the clutch LEVER area? you can take that out by sliding the rubber boot(near front cyl.exhaust exit.) you'll see the lock nut NEED two wrenches.DON"T get ahead too much before you familarize with all this.IF lever is pretty tight its OK.Go back to the primary cover area. Check Out the Manuals area Before doing the work. Post up and there is plenty of Help on This Forum if any problems arise.Welcome To Buell XB .com

Sounds like your primary or clutch and/or both are way out of adjustment. The clutch should be making a whining noise like it has a supercharger on it and will slip on the top end. Been there done that.

Ok to add more to this I just went out and looked at my chutch and it was fine and i looked at my primary chain and it was cold and had 1/2" of movement so thats fine. I went ahead and changed the fluid in my primary as well.

Ok more detail

Ok i started the bike and went and shifted through the gears and at times when i was cycling through the gears it would turn very hard and i wasnt able to shift up until i took the pressure back off and tried again. or other times i would try to shift it would just freely move but the trans wouldnt actually shift until i went completly down on the shift and tried again. Please help Thanks

The trans fluid was extremely dark and on the magnetic plug there wasn't really any shavings to worry about. (the fluid was changed last year or 2 years ago) And yes i pulled in the clutch while it wasnt running and it was the same the shift lever was either as if it was frozen at times or it seemed like it was skipping gears or it was just freely move up but wouldnt shift gears. i hope this helps and you can get me closer to fixing my problem.

I have the same problem. When bike is running it sounds fine. When I have it in gear and give it gas it will make a winding sound. It shifts to all gears and rides fine. Just a loud winding sound. I adjust my clutch from the 3 bolt cover. It has about a nickel of gap. I changed my oil about 2 week's ago then it started leaking oil from the clutch adjustment area, like I can see a pool inside the cover. I followed Dave's YouTube video 2.5 in swing arm and 4oz in filter 1/2qt in primary 2 bolt cover on primary. Please help.

Laxmsoe I'm afraid I may have bad news. Sounds like your shift shaft maybe bent it would be the one with the two forks on it. Mine was bent n occasionally would slip out of gears then eventually locked up. Hope it's not cause it's a complete tear down.

You having a shop do it or are you tackling it yourself. I just rebuilt my engine because of this and I'm curious what a shop charges. If you tackle it yourself and need any help let me know.

did it myself, seeing a bearing race I can't identify and since I just sold my house I can not tear into it again. Will be checking the shop prices to see if it's worth it. [confused]

Alright guys i have a bad problem well i hope not but my bike doesnt down shift got stuck in fifth all the way home from work it still shifts up but nothing to down shift i dont know what to do

After checking and Testing the outer Adjustments then inner Primary clutch pak. Every time I have had a Buell Especially an XB model Bike here in the Shop it was a Inner Fork or Shifter Drum. Sounds like you are going to need to remove the Primary Cover and check the Shifter shaft and fork parts. If they are not bent then the Primary cover needs to be installed and the Engine will have to be removed.
The Shifter Drum may need to be replaced.
The case has to be split and then check ALL the parts for chips in the Gears the Shifter Drum and Forks inside this area. Should you need those parts make sure you don't skip a part Especially the Case Bearings. There is actually a correct way to shift the XB bikes. Most shift the bike like a Foreign Bike which is hard on the XB style transmission since the Parts are NOT constructed with Buells for that purpose. Speed Shifting the XB bikes is not a good Idea. I Shift mine Smoothly and Use 75/90 AmsOil which does help keep it up and riding FOR Now anyways. I hope it is an easy fix. Good Luck. *Jimi

my 2009 firebolt is stuck in first gears any suggestions?
Shift to second , Just kidding sounds like your shift synchronizer is off. Other than that I dont know good luck though.

Check springs on the shift mechanism in the primary. If those are still good then you are going to have to go into the trans.

My $$ on the shift fork. Happened to me but the opposite. Poof taking off from a light as I upshifted 2nd , real hard to shift up. Shifted down just fine just not past n. It wouldnt go into first at all. Made it home from work then I coulndt get it past third once cool. Then no third after I played with it a bit. Fixed it myself for about $300 and got new pistons+a bore job for $375 from nhrs to top it off. Took me three weekends and alot of pictures but its was worth it.
