My dad got his 05 SCG out for the first ride of the season today. He rode 5 miles or so out of town and when he came to the highway went up thru the gears but only up to third. He said the shifter moved but it would not go up to 4th. 1-3 operate and feel norimal. Bike sat in an unheated garage all winter and has about 4K on it. Any ideas? He has not checked anything yet.

Can't say for sure, but I Hope it's as simple as adjusting the clutch. If you don't have one, at the top of this page, click on the link "Buell Service Manauls", download/save one to your computer. Then check out Maintenance - Clutch.

Also, I had to shift fairly aggresively till I switched to Royal Purple. (Doubt that's the problem, but thought I'd put it out there) Hope you get it sorted.

We have a service manual and I am a auto tech and I can fix just about anything mechanical. I am going to look at it this weekend but I would like to know where to look! I know it shifts a lot harder than my boxer bike but it has always shited.

Congrats! [smirk] Again, I hope it's as simple as adjusting the clutch via the screw behind the clutch cover on the primary, since you've got the Service Manual.

did you change the oil before/after the winter?
what's the condition of the oil?

You might want to check the shift linkage. My wife adjusted the shift lever very low and it was causing similar problems on her 06 XB12SS. I returned the shift lever to a more normal position and everything is back to working fine.

Dad rode it today and it shifted like nothing ever happened. The oil only has 1000 miles on it, but it is 20w50 and the temps are in lower 40s here. I am going to check the clutch adjustment and change the oil this weekend. I looked for 10-40 diesel oil as the manual says I can use it, but the best I could find is Rotella 5-40 syn. The local HD dealer didn't have any light oil in stock and the closest Buell dealer is s 2 hour ride. Think I can use the 5-40?
