I bet helmets would have saved many of those ones that died... some wipeouts are so bad the helmet cant make a difference.. but the real shame is when some sucker low-sides at 50mph and dies of brain injury when if he had a helmet on, he would have walked away unscathed and grown up to be a wiser and better rider... that's the real shame.

I,ve had no less than 3 helmets that saved my life. One on the street and two on the track. One of the track ones looks like it as hit with a ball peen hammer, one real good hit right through the paint, gelcoat and left frayed fiberglass strands hanging out. Imagine if my head took that hit. The street one had paint from the car I hit on the chin bar, the forehead and on the shattered the faceshield. Also the styrofoam on the forehead part was about half as thick afterwards. I can't get over how many riders I see with no helmets every time I visit the states. Not this cat. ATGATT!!

I live in Jersey, work in philly......I actually see guys pull over once they get into Philly and take their lids off. I have zero interest in riding any of my machines without all the proper gear, wont even ride my quad on my property without a lid on. Mountain biking same thing, I won't ride w out the proper gear on including a lid. Chicago, sorry about the loss of your friend.....and Wayne thanks for the very detailed description of your helmets after your unfortunate get offs, I hope some idiot just read that and imagined what would have happened to his head and face in such a circumstance and changes his ways!!!!!!

I live right by the iowa nebraska line and see tons of ppl take their helmets off as soon as they cross into iowa. Even had some jerkoff on poker run in iowa hassle me about not needing mine anymore bcuz I was in iowa....
Chicago: that is a strange stat, I would've assumed freeway, interstate, expressway, and divided highway to be MUCH safer than side streets or even 2 lanes. Sorry about your friend...

I hadn't snowboarded in about 15 years, back when it was relatively new. It was normal to ski/board with no helmet because they only used them in the Olympics.
Well, since then things have changed, a lot! Just last December I went to Breckenridge with some friends and rented a board that came with all the gear. If it didn't include a helmet, I wasn't going to get one, why bother? You're just boarding...
I didn't wreck, matter of fact I had one of the best weeks of hardcore boarding I had ever!! Picked up right where I left off. I had never felt so confident and comfortable just by wearing the helmet. We went all over those mountains that week and all I had to think about it how fast I could go, no nagging angel on my shoulder telling me to be careful.
One of my friends that went was learning and although she did fantastic on the bottom of the mountain, she went out a month later a fell backwards so hard she got a concussion...with her helmet on!

Now that you read that story, here's another one:)

Her husband is the guy I'm doing the 300 mile/day LA to Pikes Peak moto trip with. He can't wait to leave the California border, pull over, and take off his helmet? He saw his wife get a concussion with a helmet. Maybe the highway blast of trash, bugs, and gravel, will change his mind. We'll see.

One more thing that is somewhat off topic is this but safety related....my cellphone is ALWAYS zipped up inside my leather jacket. It is NEVER mounted on my machine being used as a gps or camera. I have go pro and a GPS unit! If you have a get off in the middle of nowhere what are the chances your machine is going to be in arms reach? If I have to call emergency services I can at least reach in my jacket. I know a guy that laid in the woods for over 24hrs screaming for help. He was run off the road by " the prosecutors daughter" he lost his foot, she never lost her license! He still rides today, but imagine if he could've called for help as soon as he went down! Probably still would have his foot......

I can't imagine riding without a helmet. It seems quite hilarious that people would actually stop to take off the helmet when they cross into a state where they aren't required. As if they only wear it because its mandatory. Argh. I don't undersrand.

Helmets have saved me from serious injury at least three times. Once just a few years ago on a dirt bike, I still got messed up and had a concussion but probably would be dead (or worse a vegetable) without it.

Once on my mountain bike head first into a tree on a down hill run slipped on a wet tree root.

Once on my snowmobile. Horrible crash. Sled destroyed. Broke my nose inside my helmet somehow. Felt like every bone in my body was broke. But no major injuries. I went to the hospital and asked them if they could just run my whole body through the xray machine. Apparently that's not allowed.

I carry a cellphone, a sharp serrated knife... and heat... I always have that knife clipped to my belt incase I have to cut anything off to get free of tangled wreckage or roadside debris... I never want to get trapped in anything unable to get free.

Tom, I thought I was the only one that carried a knife for those exact same reasons......

I carry a blade on me as well. Not just for me but for others, I'm an emt on the side. I where my helmets when I ride. One is a half helmet that I where a billet aluminum facemask with, solid state covers. I have ridin without a lid before and didn't like it. The reason for Illinois not having a helmet law is due to abate. They have fought legislation for a helmet law. Helmets do work. But to each there own. Sorry for your lost Chicago. I just wander what the stats are for the state of Chicago vs the state of Illinois.

Re knife: Good thought, but carrying a blade while riding, you'd have to be sure that the knife / blade is not able to kill or injure you in the madness of a collision or tumble. Would have to be effectively sheathed I guess for safety.
