I have inherited a used 07 xb12r. It was my sisters boyfriends. He brought it in on a trailer almost 4 years ago because it had a flat and they broke up and he moved off 2 years ago. After endless messages and conversations with his parents, the bike has been deemed abandomed and in 21 more days, it will be mine.
I have been around dirt bikes most of my life but I have never owned a street bike. It has been parked outside in a parking place for 3 years. I am wondering what all I need to check to get it running so I can sell it or keep it for myself. I will change the oil, gas, etc. It has been dropped and has a broken blinker and foot peg. The seat is dry rotted along with the plastics being fadded. I can have new tires put on it. But all in all it dosent look too bad. Do I need to do anyting with the shocks? Would I need to change the drive belt? After sitting for so long is it safe to just charge the battarey and start it up with only new gas? Any help would be appreciated. I would rather hear from owners than talk to some yahoo at a third party repair shop.

I think you should just not deal with the headache, and sell it to me. Looks to be worth about $300, but I will be nice and give you $500....deal? Lol.

That bolt looks cherry man, get it running and ride it like it deserves to be.

My Son ,just got a 04 XB12S that has been sitting up for a few years. We have drained the bad gas,it was really gunked up. We followed a suggestion from a member here on the forum and flushed it with Kerosene. That cleaned the tank, but I think we have a bad fuel pump.
We are taking the pump out tomorrow just to see if maybe there is a loose ground on it or if its just needs a good cleaning. It also had a little cosmetic issues ,but I found everything We needed here on the forums. The members are are very helpful,so just ask if you run into any issues.
We paid 2800.00 for it and it has 4800 miles on the odometer.I think we got a great deal with what little we have spent so far, even if we do have to buy a fuel pump.
I will give you a update tomorrow on what thae fuel pump looks like after we take it out,and some pics when I figure out how to do that here.
You will have a awesome bike when you get it ready!

no....it is not. sitting outside uncovered for 3 years always results in water and tons of moisture being in places you don't want it. cylinders and primary come to mind on this bike you are describing. before you do anything whatsoever do the following 2:
1-remove both plugs, spray a penetrant of your choosing into each cylinder, let soak, spray a bit more. attach correctly sized good battery and spin motor over with plugs out. if there is any water in the cylinders this method will hydraulic it out.
2-do not spend one dime on it until you can ascertain that your DMV will give you a clear clean title in your name given the circumstances. if not it is a pure parts bike.
