What would you consider a fair price for a 2003 xb9r with 55,000 miles, assuming it has no problems and no upgrades? I know that's not much of a description or detail, but give me a price range, please. Thanks

Wow, that's too many miles for my blood. I sold my 03 with 15,000 for $4000 last Sept. For that I would not go over $1500/1800

what xtreme said but i've seen sportsters hit the 100K mile mark and still running strong with unopened motor. has it been maintained well and ridden sensibly...or beaten to death?

bikes that run and haven't been dropped or abused where most stuff still works seem to have a bottom price in the low $2s. Your downside risk here is pretty low. If you enjoy working on bikes and want to keep it for a while, sounds like a good deal to me.

Thats the kind of bike you buy as a project for real cheap 1200-1500.. tear it down, rebuild the top-end and replace the clutch, throw some mods into it while youre at it, take your time, do it right. Repaint the frame and swing arm, freshen up the forks and rear shock. you may as well stroke it out to 1200, alot of it could be done with XB12 salvaged parts off of ebay. I bet you could get all that done for under a grand if you did your own work.

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't gone to see the bike yet because it's about 100 miles away from me. After seeing what he was asking for it, I decided to check with the most knowledgeable people about it (you all) to see if it was even worth going to check out. I can't speak on whether the bike has been well-maintained or not. He claims it has, obviously. He installed forged pistons and new jug gaskets at 40,000 miles. Other than that, no motor work or transmission work. He claims that there is a wrist pin rattle if you try to ride it too hard before it warms up, and that he believes that that is normal for a high RPM Harley motor.

waiting on uli luigi to chime in on this one. he has a uly with 50K on it and we were cruising down the hwy at 95 mph with no problems his bike ran like it was the day it was new. 90 % of a motors life is determined by the first 5k miles and maintnence if that is not done correctly your asking for problems but i wouldn't pay more then 2k for it even if it had a ton of mods

negative on that. there is no such thing as a "high rpm" air cooled H-D motor since we're not talking about XR models here. wrist pin would have been replaced in conjunction with alleged new forged pistons. a knocking noise will be bad con rod big end bearing and pin....rattle most likely valvetrain like worn cams and bushings.

Maint. is the big thing, good oil and regular changes, if he has not had to do anything to suspension/clutch or tranny, it was probly ridden responsibly, I would not have an issue at 2k, but, if it is a replaced dash, milage is a lie, a good eye can tell you if it is what he says, good luck

Would these noises go away once the bike has been warmed up?

valve train gets a "little" quieter when warm, a knock will get louder, you gotta remember, these are noisy engines, until you get used to it, you will hear all kinds of ghost/phantom noises, most folks here will do a complete fluid change on a new purchase, it will tell you a lot about internal condition

Interesting. Is anyone familiar with a rattle or knock (or anynoise, for that matter)that would completely subside once the engine has warmed to operating temperature? I know my descriptions aren't much to go off of, but all input is appreciated. Thanks again.

A knock and 55,000 miles I would not give more then $800.00 for it at this point its almost a parts bike.imo

With the prices these days, I would just keep looking rather than take a chance on this one - unless you can get it for super cheap (~1k).

I'm looking forward to seeing my 03 xb9r going 50k. That's awesome. How much is he asking? Or are you selling it:D

uhhhhhhhhh yea i wouldnt touch that with a 20' pole. Asking too much, tell him to take 2k off and youre nearing reasonable. I bought my 03 xb9r for 3500 with 8k miles jardine, breather, and race ecm
