Forum member RedWhiteandBuell told me about these batterys a year or so ago and i knew i always wanted one. I finally order it last night. If i remember right he makes these himself. and man are they small.. And from the spec they are also much better than others,. The company is motydesign.com. the url added below is to the battery that is needed for our bikes with an awesome feature with the quick disconnect. This is what i ordered.. I compared it to the ebr nano battery.. for the price they the motydesigns is gonna be everyone pick im sure..

10 pounds heavier, bulky, most likely gonna need to see a battery tender at some point throughout the year.. the moty designs doesnt need a frequent charge and the Moty designs is hand made for YOUR specifications.. just thought I would share a really good product.. ass you can see I compared it to our founders battery. And its half the price.. just trying to help some guys out..

RedWhiteandBuell has a Moty and from what I've seen the quality is right on par if not above ballistic. Waiting to see how the cold changes how it acts. I know some people have said the ballistic cells like to bog down initially when it's cold.

How is it on par? It looks like it is wrapped in black plastic and its not a in a hard shell like BB. It's amps are much lower then the BB 360 vs. 410. And its is still more expensive. 185 vs. 167$. I would not say that this is on par with a BB but if it was cheaper I think it would be a choice to consider.

Hey BadTitan, don't be offended at the trite responses.
You opened the pandoras box of "battery discussion", which is almost worse than asking what oil to use.:D

The Ballistic performance and Motydesigns are both good lithium batteries, But the BP one has a nice plastic case.

I wonder where I can find cheap lithium cell batteries to solder together myself[confused]. Hmmm....

Of all the batteries you guys are comparing to the original post, none are as small as the one badtitan posted. Some are downright MUCH larger. As someone who would love to change his CR tail to an XB tail, space is of the essence...

Yes that other is smaller but it is not as well protected either.
If you dont think the BB is small enough to go with another tail you have never seen the battery. It cut so much space in my tail I could run a full sized water bottle in the new gap. (Not anymore cause I am now running their 16 cell HD with is taller)

I am not saying the other battery is bad or worse, im just saying for what it is and what it provides it is over priced in my opinion.

Brian at MOTYDesign originally started making the 4-Cell QD batteries for 600RR.net members and other I4 bikes. There are some members on that forum that still have is original 4-Cell design powering their bikes. They are small and very lightweight. I have his 8-Cell QD in my Honda and it hasn't missed a beat. It cranks stronger than with my OEM battery and fires right up.

Here is the weight comparison on my Honda battery and the MOTY.

I saw that everyone was talking about looking like it's just wrapped in black plastic. That particular model is, but it is still very high quality. Also, he does offer OEM style hard cased batteries as well.12 Cell OEM Hard Case. And he also has them wrapped with terminals as well.

For the Buell, I just got mine back on the road after spending the entire summer trying to figure out why it would not stay running. Wolfo and I finally got that figured out so I just started riding it again last week so I haven't had a lot of time to see if the 12 Cell is adequate. I will try and get a weight comparison to night to post up. It is really light compared to the stock monster that's in there and takes up about 1/3 of the space.

As for my XB12R, the verdict is still out on it. The fan running is what has always worried me. So far I have put it in and the first start it bogged it way down on the first crank and on the second it fired right up. Went for a ride stopped and started it a few different times after 10-20 minutes riding each time. It would fire up on the first crank each time. The next time I rode, after sitting over the weekend and having the fan run the last time I shut it off, it bogged down a little (about as much as my stock battery did) but fired right up. I rode for about 30 minutes before I shut it off (the fan ran). Had it off for a few minutes and tried to start it and it bogged way down like the first start with the new battery. After that the bike was off for about 30-45 minutes again. Went to start and it started up easily very little bogging.

I got my 12 cell from Brian on a trade for my stock 600RR exhaust so I didn't pay anything for it. After being impressed with my 8-Cell in my Honda, and other work and dealings with Brian with my RR, I was going to purchase the 12-Cell for the Buell before we worked out the trade. Overall they are very high quality and probably the lightest battery out there. You won't find a better person to deal with than Brian. He has a strong and longtime presence on the Jap bikes forums from his gauge work and batteries. I think these batteries are perfect for those bikes.

Our riding season is about over here in Nebraska so I won't get a ton of time with the battery in the Buell before I pull it for the winter, but so far it is working (better than my dying OEM was). Not sure how all the the other lightweight batteries perform with the XBs so I can't compare with them.

The reason I didn't have anything to say about ballistic batterya is because I had one in my 4 wheeler.. thinking that hard case would be an ideal thing for an ATV. Getting beat up and taking a hell of a beating.. well long story short it had been mounted solid. No movement at all. The top cap and split apart within a few hour of ride time and when it did this it caused the battrry to arc out on the frame and caught the atv on fire and it burnt to the ground.. i had over 14g in this fully built 08 yfz 450. I never got to race it due to ballistic. It never cranked as hard as a stock battery either.. maybe it was just my bad luck

any reports on how they handle the heat and vibration? last time i rode an I4 i remember it being pretty smooth and liquid cooling helps. not the cooling fan PUSHING hot air onto the battery all while beating the poor hell out of it with vibration.

I contacted an EBR tech via email a while back about their "Nano-Teck Battery". He said it was meant for race use. The bike should be started with an alternate power source and then their lithium battery can be used to run the electronics while you are racing.

A 16 cell would be the minimum size I would run in the Buell. But you still might run into clock/odometer resetting issues in cold weather, and you have to figure out a way to mount the battery in the tray. 1badtitan's story was also very terrifying. If you decide to go lithium, make sure you make measurements and decide how you will secure the battery and attach the power cables before you spend money.
