Well, sadly, while out on a ride a week or so ago I noticed my front strap had broken. I pulled into a local hardware store grabbed some bailing wire and wired it up so I could finish the ride and get home.
Got home, ordered the new strap, but got a surprise when I went to put it on..
I noticed my header seemed loose, upon further inspection it looked like the rear nut had fallen off but when I looked closer I saw the front stud of the rear header was snapped..
Can't really believe I have to rip it completely apart to fix it, but that'll give me the excuse I've been looking for to do a new top end.. After all, I'm sure it's only gonna be a 20 minute difference in tearing it down..
Any opinions about piston kits, high compression, or stock replacements? Would love to do a big bore conversion but there aren't enough funds available for that venture..

I just put 9 pistons in my 12, still needs tuned but there's definitely a big change.

fyi 9 pistons in a 12 put it at a 12:1

and so far no ping on 91 octane gas. my only issue, which I think can be fixed with a proper tune is my bike doesn't want to idle.

Do you have a 9 or 12 and what year and miles?

Pretty common occurance. Front strap breaks. If you don't catch it, header bolt takes the force now and then fails. Sucks

This is what happened when my straps broke. And at the time I thought it broke my foot when it came loose.

Same thing happened to me but it was my front header stod that broke, I have xb9 pistons in my 12 with the race map flashed to.my ecu, on the dyno it was a little lean up top had to add fuel but idle was spot on.

I just got done with my rebuild, so realistically it could have been from just about anything I fixed. I just didn't notice it with the 12 pistons.

Mine is an 06 xb12r.. I'm tempted to do the 9 pistons for the higher compression ratio. I do have a few days to read up on it..
If all goes well, I'll have the rest of the frame and the cylinders off tonight.
I'm having someone check out my cylinders as a precaution, the bike only has 11k miles on it, but I figured since I'm down that far I may as well have a look..

I just realized that was even a race pipe Wolfo, that makes it twice as sad..

It still works, just a bit banged up. I have 3 race pipes in my collection though so I put one of the others on and I'm going to work on this one to get the dents out and make it look nice and pretty.

Before that day it was a mint condition can though.

EBR actually sells muffler straps now.

asb sells the stock ones.

I think ebr might be cheaper though.
