I went to jump on my bike last night and have a new sound louder than my valve train noise. Sounded kinda like it was reverberating through my exhaust. Started poking around today and am more confused now.

I had thought it was probably an exhaust leak and did notice exhaust soot at my collector because I did not use any sealant which is recommended.

Here's what confuses me. I put my hand over the exh outlet expecting to be able find a leak and the sound goes away and my header gaskets don't leak! To make matters worse now I'm hyper sensitive and think my valve train and trans are louder than before! Maybe they are?

Ring any bells?

If at idle it kinda sounds like a carhops coin changer check for a loose core in the exhaust can.

My Wileyco sounded like that until I upgraded the core.

Jramsey.. Shouldn't be the core... Brand New race muffler.

Anrkizm... It's a buell race exhaust on my x1... The header is a replica of race header.

I checked all the welds too. Hmmmf. I'll try sealing the muffler to collector see if maybe that has something to do with it.

My baby drinks only the finest petroleum products Blastonia!

Got the muffler pulled off. It definitely needs exhaust sealant at the collector, getting a lot of blow-by. That may be what I am hearing.. oddly enough it didnt do it when it was first installed.

Jramsey... with the muffler off I decided to check the core. THE CORE IS LOOSE?!?! I don't know if its enough to make the sound I am hearing but if I shake it front to back really hard I get a little clink sound. It has less than 500 miles on it!

Does anyone have or have re-packed a tuber race muffler? Does the core just float or is it attached somewhere somehow? Seems odd that it would be loose on a new muffler. I suppose if its just a single spot weld it could have broken long before it got installed. I really did not want to pull my muffler apart so soon but I may just have to... or live with it till its re-pack time.

Thanks Joel... Even tho its got less than 500 miles I may as well while its apart. I think the kit from ASB is improved material too.

Got my pipe apart... nothing broken... core just slides freely enough to make an annoying noise.

Kinda sucks to pull it apart when the packing is 97% there!

A few people have told me they packed with steel wool. Think I might give that a go and figure out a way to keep that core from sliding around.

At least I know how to repack my muffler now! Whether it needed it or not. :p
