New guy here, still asking new guy questions... Besides the motor size, HP and TQ numbers, whats the biggest differences in the 12R and the 9R? Ive ridden a gsxr600 then a 1000, i can tell a difference in the pick up and go and weight. Is it that big of a difference in the 12 and 9's also?

hp,tq and gearing 12s have a higher top speed.a 12 will be close to your 600 its going to be slower and less power.

Havnt been on a 12 but from what i understand the 9s are peppier but the 12s pull harder.

I've owned both and the engines are the biggest, and pretty much only, difference.

The 9 is a higher winding motor and it is fun to really thrash on. It makes decent power and good torque but isn't exceptional in either.

The 12 makes quite a bit more torque and has a more "relaxed" feel to it. It is definitely more powerful than the 9 but it's not nearly as dramatic as going from a 600cc Japanese bike to a literbike. The 12 is definitely a great "all around" motor. It makes good power and is still fun to wring out but can be ridden gently on a "relaxing cruise" kind of ride and it's just as suited for that as well.

Personally, I liked both but for different reasons. Their both good motors and I wouldn't be the least bit upset to own another 9.

Cpt Choas, thanks for the insite that lays it out like i needed... Thanks... What is the aftermarket like for eng upgrades?

I thought the 9 and 12 both had the same top speed. I know the 12 is geared taller, but I thought it was to make up for the lower redline.

The weight isn't too different. I think it's 10lbs, and half of that is in the exhaust because the 12 has a valve and is double sleeved. If you switch to an aftermarket exhaust they'd be pretty much the same. Haven't gotten to ride an xb12 yet, but coming from a 600, I think I'd definitely like to trade my xb9 in for one someday. I love my bike, but definitely pictured something a little stronger when I bought it. I drove 5 hours both ways to pick it up, so I didn't get a test ride. If I had I probably would've considered holding out for a 12.

no not even close on the comparison 600 to 1000 maybe more like a 600 to 750 .. 9's just noses over faster in each gear (hits the rev limiter) then the 12s so you get about 3-4 bike lengths jump on a 12. one of the things to think about is what is your weight? under 170lbs buy a 9 and save on insurance over 180lbs get a 12 and insurance will be more but you will enjoy it more :)

So.... It sounds like the biggest difference between the 12 and the 9 IS the 12 and the 9. Lol :D

the color of the frames are different also. I have yet to ride a 9r. I have teh 12r and would say that it has been a great bike. I've owned a 600 and a shovelhead.
