I get pulsing deceleration when I use the front brake. Why is that, and what can I do to fix it? Am I in danger?

Warped roter would be my guess. You are not in immediate danger but I would replace it soon. Might as well get new pads while your at it.

^^^^ this and/or glazed dirty rotor. if you've never removed the front wheel and rotor assembly on your own then get help. done incorrectly and yes.....you'll be in danger. check pads, check caliper cleanliness or lack thereof, remove rotor from rim and have local machine shop run a ball-mill over it to deglaze and check flatness of it. much cheaper than new rotor and usually solves pulsing problem. the rotor hardware and correct installation can be tricky. get assistance if you're not comfortable doing it.

Start with cleaning your rotor hardware. Make sure it is moving, I'm guessing mine sat up for awhile before I bought it and mine was very bad but after working brake fluid and penetrating oil in it it has gotten much better, eventually I will replace the rotor, hardware, and pads though so it is completely gone.

Should I replace with OEM rotor and pads, or is there upgraded hardware I can use to avoid having this problem again?

Ebr and american sportbike sell an upgrade but stock is good. Be sure you also replace hardware. You may try to machine and replace hardware if money is tight. Any brake place or machine shop should be able to handle the job.

Rotor mounting bolts, bushings, washers and springs are required to be replaced per the service manual. See page 2-11 of the xb9r service manual pdf...
