It seems I have read here somewhere that the spacers should be replaced along with bearings.
Am I imagining this or is that the recommended way to go?[confused]

the manual states to replace 'em, but could be reused if not damaged when removing the bearings. my OCD won't let me reuse:D but that's just me and my profession in aviation to be meticulous in replacing parts when it states to do so.

That's why I'm asking here thrstrmech, I am very much like you. If I have it apart, I should replace all I can!
But I also realize that's pretty silly sometimes, so I rely on the experience and expertise of the fine folks here to talk sense into me.

Its worked for me for years.:D

great info provided above by usual suspects. if in doubt the below are 4 sure-fire ways to check wheel spacers to insure they are re-useable.
1-put a piece of perfectly flat glass on a workbench. after a thorough cleaning stand the spacer on the glass with one end as its footprint. standing perfectly vertical? it's fine. tilted or tipping over? it's junk
2-acquire specific OEM length of the spacer. then measure it with accurate caliper. within specs? it's fine.
3-look at each end after a thorough cleaning. do you see the subtle yet visible production hatch marks? if so it is fine.
4-if you gouged...burred...hammered...substantially nicked....or bitched up either end of the spacer during bearing removal it is junk. replace it.

or for those of us without ocd and not using out bikes to fly.... sell spacer, buy alkohol with newly acquired funds, place empty toilet paper holder between bearings (you may have to roll it up a bit to fit and tear it of one side to fit). Test at high speed and confirm bike dont suddenly swerve into oncoming traffic. If not, your good to go!!
