is this a normal sound? have a xb9s 03/as i slow down from highway speeds coming to a stopsign it whines if i pull the clutch in it stops/any ideas?i adjusted the chain a few times and it really didnt do much. i did it cold and i did it hot. thanks

is it the belt? mine would wine a lot after i replaced it but now that its got a few miles on it its gone away. is it perhaps a squeal you hear that could be coming from the transmission? mine will do that if I'm in first at a light with the clutch lever pulled in.

Definitely check the primary chain. Also make sure the fluid level in the primary is correct.
Also try adjusting the clutch.
Report back and let us know what you come up with.
BTW how many miles on the bike?
Good luck

the bike has only 8k and an easy 8k the original owner was a tech at harley/buell in bergen county NJ at 8k he gave it to his brother who was 55yrs he drove it 273 miles in a 2yr time frame and i got it march this yr it now has 8700 on it. the primary has EXACTLY 1QT 20/50 amsoil/i drain it overnight after a few mile ride/i have the service manual/ i did the chain a few times cold a few times hot/the inspection cover opening from the bottom of the chain to the opening is 1/2 so if the bottom of the chain lifts to that is 1/2 of play correct? then i rotate it by tapping the starter and take 8to10 dif messurements to find the tight spot and set thst at the 1/2 play. AM I DOING THAT CORRECT? i never adjusted the clutch it feels good never a slip or a chatter/this is the only buell i ever owned what should the clutch feel like /i do know shifting is never smooth/i had a ninja 900 back in the day/ maybe this is just them.i been reading on here ever since i got it/and i have to tell you that you guys are serious about helping buell guys out. nobody gets nasty/cockey/ or steers anyone the wrong way. my problem is i never owned one and i have nothing to compare it with. anyhelp is appreciated

I clicked on this thread because I thought you were referring to my ex!

So it only does it on decel with clutch in? The chain will whine if adjusted too tight and hot. Does temp make a difference?

Can you make a video of it?

I adjust my chain cold. Find tight spot. Mine is the same everywhere. I adjust til I can push the chain up from the resting spot the same distance of the chain. So visualizing where the chain is I push it up so the bottom of the chain is where the top was previously.

Sounds like you did it right.

Does it sound like a bearing whine?

thats kind of wierd i wouldnt say its a bearing type whine im a auto tech of 30 years/ not that kind of sound/ someone said my chain is to loose when its cold 1/2 slack is spec in the manual.i measure similar to you the bottom of the chain to the bottom of the insp. opening is 1/2. that what i do./why if i pull the clutch in does it seem to go away slowing down?/they dont coast like a jap bike with a chain do they?

i wish i could do a moving video i still use a filp cell phone and i got a $100 beat up lap top on e-bay just so i could plug in the ecmspy and do the tps and finally get rid of the trouble codes/ well that was the bad ecm/but still had to set the tps. lol

Shifting is diesel tractor like compared to a jap bike. I went from a honda to a Buell and couldn't believe the effort required at the shifter lever! 9yrs later and I find it an endearing characteristic of the bike!
Look up how to do a clutch adjustment. It's super easy. Even if it feels good, it's something that you'll know you checked and won't have nagging you at the back of your mind.
Definitely sounds like you've adjusted the chain correctly.
The whine you hear might just be a characteristic of your bike. Or something you're just not accustomed to hearing.
Has the bike always done it?
Have any parts recently been replaced?
This might not be the best advice but if it's running, shifting and feeling good.... Just ride on! If it ain't broke. Don't fix it.
I used this mind set till my crank bearing failed at around 37k miles. I was meticulous with my maintenance and still am. It was just one of those things.
Good luck

chicknstripn you are right/its probably the nature of the beast.really except brakes/front tire/and the ecm/and a shifter bushing kit nothing else had to be done.i even checked the rear bearings everything is smooth/so if its not broke dont fix it/and drive it till it does i guess.i reset the tps after i did the oil change because it was off allittle why do they do that? i put a used ecm and i dont have any cil aka check lite but when i do a running test with the ecmspy plug in in the history it shows open to ground for the injectors why would that happen? any help would be appreciated. thanks

So happens that my 04 XB12S is doing the same thing, whining sound on no throttle decel. Checked primary chain and it is spec, primary fluid is clear. No visible break wear. Replace front wheel bearings last year. Rear seem fine upon inspection. Had the belt tensioner off over the winter and had not indication of bearing problems there either. Didn't make the noise until this spring. At a loss what it might be. Almost sounds like the SX and RX decel.

i took it for a long fast ride i hammered triple digits/the electric fan was on when i got to a light/that was a first.and after that it was alot more quiet. and as far as the ecm fault codes they come back under history/maybe im doing something wrong erasing them./is it normal for the idle to drop down slowly? well i thought it might be the tps because im glad the luniticfrinde told somebody back down the idle screw all the way out then hit the tps reset on the ecmspy THEN get the screen with the dials to set it. so i did that after my ride/this time i shut the ignition off when i was done with the tps reset/then i closed the program/and shut the lap top down. i hope the is the correct proceedure? thanks for the help
