Time for a new battery, lithium's while more expensive, last longer and weigh 1/3 of a lead battery.

What models are you running?

Or, how many cranking amps does a 12 require?

i am kinda. i started out this yea with a li-ion battery and it seemed to be working great. then my trans bearings went out. i wanted to use it longer before reporting. it would crank like crazy sometimes. way faster than ever before. other times it would click then crank like crazy but it would reset my clock. i think that was just due to a bad ground issue. and it broke before i got to look into that further. anyway this is the one i was using.

bought it from a shop about 50 miles from me off of ebay actually.

thats a big battery! 400+ cranking amps. Must have spun that motor like crazy.

Looking around online, it seems like our stock lead batteries crank out ~220-250 amps.

Do we need more on a Lithium?

You should be using 8 cell not 12cell.

From there website below

"XB12R Firebolt XB12S Lightning, 2004-2008, 8 Cell"

bah now im not sure. on the wbesite tells me 16 cell. Might have too see if someone posts with one.

i'm running a lithium as well an get the clock reset every once in a while as well, but not all the time. Not sure on the size, but its really small like half the size of the stock battery demensions

i've always been under the impression that most folks on here are budget-conscious as i am...frugal...whatever. not unusual to get 4 seasons out of a properly maintained buell battery and can't you buy about 3 of them for the price of one lithium job? i don't see the high price off-setting the advantages, but that's me.

the 8 cell says for under 1000cc

buell05 in that thread states his hd battery tested at 347 cca. if you dont go li-ion make sure its a harley battery. all the other ones really dont have enough cca.

I'm running a ballistic battery 12cell for about a year now with no problems. Cold weather starts are a bit slow but once the battery warms up it's good.

I have a 12 cell and will be switching to a 16 cell very soon. The 12 cell has plenty of juice if it is warm but when it is cold, it requires a "warm up" trial (unsuccessful) crank before it will fully crank. The 16 cell should eliminate that.

I only switched to a lipo battery to make room for additional electronics. If I didn't need that space, I would have stayed with a stock agm battery.

not unusual to get 4 seasons out of a properly maintained buell battery and can't you buy about 3 of them for the price of one lithium job?

Agreed! The track is the only place I can see a clear advantage of li-ion due to the significant weight savings. In terms of cost to service life, gel-cells are the way to go.

Even the cheapest gel-cells have given me a minimum 5 years service, and I have gotten as much as 18 years if you can believe it!

On the streets, the only benefit I can see would be bragging rights...

stock battery the are 4.44inch wide(L),3.93inches tall(H), 2.36inches deep(H).

I have a Ballastic battery 16 cell . it is GREAT !! and fits great and never have to worry about it not cranking over in any weather or it draining from non-use or storage.

Battery Application Chart
16 Cell EVO2 (100-013) - $269.99

The 16 Cell EVO2 is the biggest powersports battery we make with burst amp capacity of 500CCA at only 3.5lbs of weight. The 16 Cell is meant for the most severe duty applications where maximum starting capacity is needed. This the solution that modified Harley and drag racing riders have been searching for. The 16 Cell is a direct replacement of the Yuasa YTX30L-BS, GYZ-20HL, and YTX24HL-BS. Typical applications are large touring bikes, ATVs, Watercraft, built sport bikes, and heavily modified Harleys. There is no special charger required, but periodic balance charging the 16 Cell EVO2 with our Ballistic Performance Components BMS charger will greatly extend the life of the battery

•Up to 80% smaller than the stock battery
•Up to 10lbs Lighter than the stock battery
•Service life of over twice a lead acid in similar conditions
•Industry leading 3 year warranty
•Designed, developed, and assembled in the USA
•Completely “dry” technology so batteries can be mounted in any direction
•Non-toxic, recyclable, and can be air shipped
•Applications for powersports vehicles from 50cc - 2300cc
•Tested extensively by professional race teams
•Impact and water resistant
•Works with the original equipment charging system
•No trickle charger required, loses only 10% of charge over a year of static use

yes the 8 or 12 cell will do fine for most any Buell ( cost less than 16cell) but I wanted the MAX cranking amps(500CCA) & best voltage and NEEDED a battery that i did not have to worry about discharging to quiclkly that I did not have to Keep on a charger all the time Especially in the cold winter time and that it would start up easly in the Heat and in the dead Extreme COLD of winter !

I have Ballistic battery the 16cell(not the 16cell HD)
starts it quicker than the old lead battery even when the lead was newer. no problems with it. alot of power from it for easier starts .

the 12cell was the biggest in cranking amp that they made until last year sometime and the 12 cell is what they used to reccomend for all big V-Twins and high compression engine bikes but now they have the 16cell and the 16 cell HD with more amps and so this is what they reccomend.
the ballistic and the other Lithium Iron Phosphate (High Power Lithium Ion Cell, Phosphate-Based) batteries are a different breed of batteries and are not for everyone , and may not be the best for you if you have always on accessories like alarm. do some research on before you buy it they are alot smaller and lighter than the lead acid batteries andyour battery holder may need a small modification to help hold it in place

Id only be interested in the smaller battery for one simple reason.... alittle room to put some glasses or maybe some gloves under the seat of my S. Even had thought about making some kind of quick release so i can pop the air box lid off and put stuff inside of it.

The EBR is nice because it has balancing and volt protection. But it has 2 major draw backs.

1) Its an 8 cell battery, and considering some of the guys here are talking about needing a 16 cell for MAX cranking power, its comparatively weak.

2) It cost $390.

So I got an email today from EBR. Basically it said that the 8 cell nanoteck from EBR is NOT recommended for use on an XB that is street driven. They recommend starting the bike with another power source, and then using the nanoteck battery to run the electronics while the bike is running. Essentially making it a race use only part.
