Hi. I'm new to buells. I just picked up a 01 x1 lightning and it has issues shifting. I've tried searching and can't seem to find the exact problem I have

Issues
-Sometime when cruising it will pop into neutral
-Hard to shift from 1st to 2nd. It will go into neutral then I have to shift up again into 2nd and still sometimes won't go
-very difficult to downshift at higher speeds
With bike off and in gear the bike drags with clutch pulled in

This is even if I shift hard and firm.

Things I've done
-changed oil with syn 20w50
-changed primary with new fluid
-adjusted primary chain to 1/2" play
-adjusted clutch as much as I could. still drags in gear with clutch pulled in

I just can't figure it out. I know these bikes dont shift like sport bikes but this isn't normal either

Please help asap. Thanks

Do I need replace parts in the trans and where can I get parts from

I'm reading from my M2 manual so forgive me if any of this sounds confusing. Also if you don't have one of these manuals I highly recommend buying one, best $40 ever.

1. Clutch adjustment- The clutch can be adjusted by pulling off your clutch cover and turning the screw near the ball and ramp mechanism clockwise. Squeeze the clutch lever three times (sets the ball and ramp mechanism) and adjust the cable adjuster to provide roughly 5/8" to 1/4" freeplay at clutch lever.

2. Transmission- This sounds like a problem in either the shift forks or the dogs on the gears (keep you in your selected gear). The second gear issue is pretty common in the motorcycle world since alot of people like to ride the sh!% out of their motorcycles and powershift through the gears like it's going out of style.

These are just what I could think of but really it wouldn't hurt to get some advice from a senior member or possibly a professional motorcycle mechanic.

I agree sounds like dog rings and/shift fork issue. Feeling pretty smart about transmissions considering i just rebuilt mine successfully.

The clutch drags in gear with lever pulled in, this is normal.

Im not a tuber guy, but i believe on those bikes you can removed the transmission assembly fairly easy, inside the primary, behind the clutch assembly is a "trap door" it unbolts and out slides your transmission assembly. Unlike my XB, have to split the engine cases just to have a look.

Thanks for the info. That helps a lot. Where can I get replacement parts. Would I be able to tell that they are worn if I looked at them.

Replacement parts should be fairly easy to come by since tubers like ours use the Harley Sportster 1200 engine/trans. You could always purchase a cartridge gearset off of ebay or I've found jpcycles.com has a decent selection of trans parts. You could always pull it yourself and look to see how bad the damage is to the gears but keep in mind removing the transmission isn't exactly as easy as an oil change. I'm not sure how to really check them for damage other than the regular stuff (uneven wear, teeth missing, etc.).

I was just thinking about one more thing, I'm not sure how much money you're planning to spend but if you're feeling gutsy enough Baker Drivetrain makes their XL6 cartridge gearset which is pricey (around $2,300 from jpcycles or $2,580 from Baker, same product). Just felt it may be worth at least looking at, the link is below.
