xb12 lightning is over heating and smoking a little out by the gas tank

i was riding my 2007 xb lightning and the check engine came on, i stopped and let it just cool off, i turned it back on then it was running for maybe 5 to 10 mins then it started to struggle to stay on and i saw some smoke come out the top. i turned it off and I'm just scared to turn it on for longer then 5 mins because i don't wanna ruin the engine. please help. thank you. i have changed the oil, i ordered plugs and ill get wires but i don't know what else the problem could be. thanks again.

Check your water level in your transfer case.
