Hi guys, so I'm building this anniversary edition xb12r that I picked up, has 512 miles but the guy stopped it breaking the front mouthing point on the head, I've replaced the head and had it all back together however it's running really poorly now, backfiring and won't idle. I've read to rest the TPS I'm waiting on the cord now.i was under the impression I had an 07 but I don't seem to have the idle screw located next to the air scoop? I'm confused is it an 07 or 08?

look at the right side of the steering neck on the frame should say year. If it late 07 it might be and 08 . if you can take a pic of the right side of motor we can probably tell you.

I just did a search, doh, it seems that the anniversary addition is an 08, does this mean I did not need to buy the cable? I read somewhere that resetting the TPS on an 08+ is done with out hooking it up to ecmspy

what rick said. you reset the tsp switch on 08-10 models with the twist grip. can walk you thru it if required but is in owners manual. after that it is gentle no-hammering 25 mile or so learn-mode ride. no prolonged idling or ham fisted throttle activity. you can purchase ecm spy or free tuner pro-rt to delve into your ecm for a variety of exercises if you will. anniversary edition is indeed the 2008 model. use the link below to decode your vin and will tell you precisely what you have.

2008 is the 25th Anniversary year. Checking the sticker on the frame will confirm the year model.

You do not need to recalibrate the TPS on 2008+ models unless you have changed/flashed the ECM or have replaced the actual TPS itself. It is done automatically by the ECM on 2008 and later model years. For 2007 and earlier - yes, it is a 10K mile maintenance item, and should additionally be done in the same cases mentioned above.

My profile has the TPS reset steps if you need to perform the procedure, as mentioned by lunaticfringe.

...does this mean I did not need to buy the cable?
The cable will be invaluable, especially since you are having issues. One of the strongest diagnostic tools at your disposal is the ability to record (datalog) and later playback how the various engine sensors and control devices perform while the engine is running.

Thanks so much guys, I'm stumped, now that I know it's not the TPS I'm running out of ideas. Bike has 500 miles a ran perfect before I swapped to a brand new head, I had my valves swapped over. I sure hope I didn't mess something up when I stalked the head! But that's pretty simple.
Maybe an air leak around throttle body?
It won't idle and backfire like crazy through the intake, I can see the fireballs!!

Did you have the TP sensor off of the throttle body at any time?

An intake air leak sounds like a candidate. Post a video, and/or record some data and upload the datalog and I'll be glad to review it. There's a large community of expertise here (ex: lunaticfringe and others) that can probably help. We just need information!

Really!!!??? That would be awesome!!!
Now I need to figure out how to post a video, it won't let me do it from my iPhone. I'll figure out, thank you so much!!!
I get on it ASAP

It could be several things, such as:
- intake air leak
- weak or no spark at one spark plug (compare them visually)
- malfunctioning fuel injector
- low fuel pressure
- contaminated fuel
- sticking valve
- sensor issue (ex: ETS, TPS)

** If you can record some engine data with your cable and TunerPro RT or ECMSpy for Mono, that would be even more helpful. It could be, but doesn't have to be, mechanical issues that could cause your problem. If a sensor sends the wrong information (ex: TPS, as others have mentioned; engine temperature), the fueling and/or spark will be wrong, and the engine will run horribly.

Thanks for having a look ReadyXB, well i'm thinking its not an injector or bad fuel as i drained the tank and added Seafoam, I also swapped the entire throttle body to a new one with zero miles and it does the exact same thing, I will insect the spark situation asap and as soon as the cable arrives i could do some data logging. Ill report back. Thanks again for taking the time to look!

Hey Malibu, Are you in Malibu CA? If so, I'm not too far away. I could bring my laptop and cable and look at some diagnostics if you like.

Start with the basics first. For one, it's never good when you have to fiddle with the throttle in order to get an xb to fire up or to get the bike to say running. In my experience anytime I've done this it's caused the bike to foul the plugs and me to chase my tail more than necessary.
This is what I would do:
-use ECMSPY and check for trouble codes. If any are present, address those first.
-check your plugs. If they are fouled you'll have starting issues.
-insure that you have good quality fuel in the tank. I have only run 93 octane in mine since I bought it back in 07 and I believe the owners manual recommends nothing lower than 91.
-check that the bike does not have an intake leak. This will cause the back firing through the intake that I noticed on your vid.
-insure that all your battery cables and grounds through out the bike are clean and tight.
-check that all your connectors are in good working order and connected properly.
-reset your TPS. Use ECMSPY to verify that you are getting a good TPS signal.
Also, I believe that 08 and newer Buell xbs have an idle air control valve or something. If this gets dirty or clogged it can cause the type of issues you're having.
Start google searching buell xb followed by whatever you're trying to figure out and you should find a bit more guidance from old threads and what not.
It's awesome that you've rebuilt the front head and are bring a buell back to life that someone gave up on. Just take it on one system one symptom at a time and you'll have it figured out before you know it.
BTW I'm no buell expert. The above is just a list if what I would do and have done when my bike had running issues.
I think some of the things I mentioned may have already been mentioned by some more knowledgeable folks. That should just reassure you that you're getting sound advice!
Good luck!
