Hi,

I have a 2004 xb12s with an aftermarket exhaust. I don't like the loud noise of it and have bought an original stock exhaust to replace it.
The exhaust valve actuator on top of the airbox is in place and plugged in but the cable is zip-tied away near the engine. And has been for a long time, judged by the look of the cable.
What should I do? Is there a benefit to reinstall the original actuated valve system? So shall I make it work like the bike original had?
Or just leave it as it is?
Or make sure the valve is fixed open?

If you're going to install an original power-valve equipped XB12 muffler on an XB12 model and everything is in place and functional to make it fully operational, then it would be idiotic and self-defeating not to bring the system back to life. They are well engineered nice systems. You will have multiple #16 and 21 fault codes stored in the ECM. Clear them out.

You're welcome.

My pleasure. To insure some longevity and proper operation, you'll want to:
Access ECM and clear out any historical fault codes
Remove IEV actuator lid to check condition of gears and internals then apply light coating of white lithium grease to gears
Use Kano kroil or Aero kroil to lube the actuator-to-muffler cable
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" the muffler valve
Check that muffler valve moves freely and that the spring is properly returning it to fully closed
After full fitment check that the cable is correctly adjusted
Check proper sequencing of the IEV actuator by KEY OFF-KILL SWITCH OFF-THROTTLE CLOSED-KEY ON-KILL SWITCH TO ON
This sequence will allow you to hear the IEV actuator running its diagnostics

So if I understand correctly, once I turn on the ignition key I should see the actuator move? Because I have tried, but it doesn't move.

Steps I listed above will activate it
Step sequence also listed in trouble-shooting/testing section of your repair manual
Next step then if not operating is to access your ECM and confirm that the IEV system has NOT been disabled
Your post indicates bike has been fiddled with or modded and the IEV might be disabled

Yes, indeed.
I have a Buelltooth stick but have minor experience in using it. However, I hooked it up and saw that the valve is disabled.
This is a good moment to dive into the ECMspy, something I allready wanted to do. Also to let the bike run properly with the new stock exhaust.
Thanks for the advice Barrett!

Thanks for your above post John. I too am currently removing my muffler(see my new post), and will be sure to run through this maintenance list for the IEV system while I'm at it. Always appreciate the sagely advice! And good luck to you Jurrien, hope it all works out.

My pleasure Bob and thanks for the kind words. Very much appreciated and hope you're doing well. I'll take a look at this other post you mentioned.
Regards, John
