XB12S runs great when warm but is a death trap when cold...

I'll summarize...2005 XB12S with 15k miles, Open Exhaust, k&n filter and airbox lid removed, breather relocated...I did the TPS reset and set idle yesterday.

I took it out for a ride today to see how it runs...it took a couple attempts to get i started before it would idle on its own. Once it did, it ran poorly in 1st gear...hesitating and surging. It seemed better at higher rpm. Once it warmed up after about 5 minutes of riding, it seemed tp be riding much better. Subsequent stops and starts resulted in it starting up the first time and idling better. It holds speed well and has good acceleration. It does still seem to idle a bit rough, but it sounds good.

I'm thinking of loading the race map to see how it rides. I'm not sure what map it has now (new owner). Any thoughts? Particularly about the hard starting, rough initial idle, surging/hesitating before it warms up...or is that normal?

Race maps may help, but I do not think the race maps affect the idle region much. You may need to custom tune that portion. I know when my bike is cold, she hesitates quite a bit under 2krpm and likes to die with small throttle inputs off idle. After about a minute or so of idle she's fine.

These bikes need to warm up before riding. Do not ever plan on getting on and riding right after start-up. I usually start it up, go back inside and put my gear on, letting it idle for 3-5 minutes. Your bike will appreciate it and show you by being much smoother once at operating temp before riding.

Also, riding before it warms up can cause base gasket leaks at the jugs and foul plugs pretty quickly
