Hey guys, I recently got a 2004 XB12S and I've been working on it the past few weeks. I changed the oil and plugs (used NGK Iridiums) and done the breather reroute but I'm still having the issue with it sputtering and even sometimes dying at stops and low rpms. Any ideas?

Oh and pics coming soon >.>

Fresh tank, I've filled it up 4 times using 93.
I also cleaned the intake butterfly last week when I did the breather reroute, its doing better at low rpm but it still falls on its face every now and then when taking off.

Thanks epipis, I think this is what it is. I bought the bike used and was told it has the race kit, I know it has the Buell race muffler and has the throttle cable removed from the module that sits on top of the air box tho that module is still there, can that be totally removed or is it still severing a purpose? How can I tell the stock ECM vs the Race one? I think they kinda half ass done this and never tuned the bike for the muffler/race ecm I know it has the stock paper filter (white and blue) instead of the red and black race buell one.

Sorry for the long post and being such a noob, this is my first bike. I will be taking it to the dealer to have the TPS reset.

I may also look into ECMspy as I install more mods.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I wouldn't take it to the dealer if all you want is a TPS reset. ECM Spy is free and the cable is cheaper than one TPS reset. You can reset TPS, AFV, and a bunch of other things as long as you are somewhat computer literate.

If you have the race ecm it will say "For Race Use Only" on the ecm. With ECM Spy you can turn the stock ecm into a race ecm, or better yet, upload a custom map tuned for your bike.

If you need a cable, I can get you one for $50, shipping including.

TylerTech,

Another way to check if you have the stock ECM or not on your 12 is to disconnect the exhaust valve servo. If your Check Engine light illuminates, then you definitely have a stock ECM, as the race ECM does not monitor for the presence of the servo.

If the Check Engine light doesn't illuminate, it means that you either have the race ECM or someone went into your stock ECM (with ECMSPY or other diagnostic tool) and disabled the exhaust servo check function (not likely if you're the original owner and didn't do this yourself).

since this is related, I'll ask here. Where can someone new to ECM, TPS, re-mapping, etc. look for basic understanding of the principles, strategy, etc?

Good point Tork.

TechMagic,

www.ecmspy.com and download the tuning guide.

There is also a bunch of tuning related posts on www.buelletinboard.com.

Thanks for the response guys, I will pick up a cable and get started on this. Man that's so simple I never expected to be able to adjust all that for so cheap!! I'm pretty computer savy so I should be able to dive right in with the guides on that site... if I can seem edit a verizon cell phone with a hex editor I think I can handle ecmspy lol. I'm just stuned that this is free software.

Oh an it was the race one it has right on it for race only like you said. One last question, the black module that sits on the top of the air box in the foam cut out is still there but has no throttle cable hooked into it. Is this serving any purpose at all now or can I go ahead and remove it?
