Hey,
Short summary, have about 5,000 miles on two wheels, currently riding a 2005 Yamaha R6 Raven and love it. Great bike, nice sound, plenty of power (did I say plenty?) and good handling and brakes. Only thing is, its just not my style. I bought it for the sound, the racing appeal and the look but knew I would never use it to even half its potential, and now I realize I could have a lot more fun on a more street oriented bike.

I ride in the 0-90mph speed range, the R6 is made for 70-165mph. I ride a lot of twisties as well as around town and the R6 is obviously an elite bike that handles great but the clip on bars are just not my style, when a quick manuever is needed or a tight series of slow turns comes up I think bars would be a lot more my style, yes the R6 could do it but I think the Buell could do it easier and be more enjoyable to ride. Basically I want something that takes very little input in the bars to turn, I have heard the buells turn intuitively, thats what I want.

I also want a slower bike, its more fun to ride a slow bike fast then a fast bike slow, but dont want to lose to much power. Thus why I think the Buell with gobs of torque but not so much top speed is a great solution.

Other bikes I considered were the Triumph Street Triple but I decided it was to close to the I4 powerband, gorgesous bike though, and the KTM Duke 690 but I decided it doesnt have the engine or ergonomics for longer riding.

I am around 170 pounds and just over 5'11". I love the look of the compact XB12Scg, the 2" shorter wheelbase is also a huge plus as that should make it turn even quicker and with less input. Its also easy to flat foot and I like the way the seat supports you (would probably switch with a City X seat, a little taller but still the bucket shape).

But I did my research and the Ss has a lot of benefits. With a touring seat (lower) it wouldnt be to tall and probably would be more comfortable then the Scg. It also has a stronger (43mm vs. 41mm) suspension with much more travel that I hear is great when the riding gets rough or you need to drop the front wheel down from an "unexpected" ascent ;). My concern is that the 2" longer wheelbase will make it less flickable and I will always be thinking about how much better the Scg could've handled.

So you may say you have a great solution, the S! Scg's wheelbase with the Ss's suspension, wrong. I want a 2009, better brakes, all black (gorgeous) and really all I can seem to find around here.

So I need some advice, Scg or Ss!?!?!

I want to test ride both but at my age (17) its hard to find to many places willing to let me take a bike for a spin, and also the type of differences wheelbase and suspension have are to suble IMO to notice on a short test ride.

Tough decision tough decision but I need to live with this bike for 4-5 years, cant put down $12,000 and keep the bike for a few months (like I did with the R6 but it was used so I wont lose more then a couple $100's in resale) only to decide I want something different.

So what do you guys think?

First off, nice write-up introduction and welcome to an addiction that has no end. My 2 cents says the Scg. I have an S with a low seat, but had I been given the chance, would've got the Scg since I'm 5'10" and can't hardly flatfoot on standstill. I'm like you, Love the blacked-out look of the 09's. Either way, welcome to one of the best Buell forums out there and Ride Safe. :D[up]

I'm pretty sure the wheelbase is the same on both the S and Scg. The cg has shorting suspension and a shorter seat. The cg's geometry actually isn't as good as the S. Being how they don't have a S in 09, I think the City X would be a good choice for you. It's just the right hight and it has great geometry. And don't underestimate the XB9s.

Welcome to the buellxb forums!

If I had the choice I would go scg. the shorter moto gp wheelbase is like nothing else. And unless your coming down uncontrolled off a 12o'clock wheelie I dont think the extra 2mm is going to make any difference. Im 5'11 and can flat foot every buell iv ever sat on so I prolly wouldn't consider height and issue for you(Tho ur legs could be shorter I spose).

I dont know if you've asked your local shops but Harley shops are a bit more laid back than SuperBike shops, and you might get away with a test ride if you got insurance and an endorsement. Try a Firebolt and an 1125 while ur at it. If you got $12k cash, you could walk out of a stealership with an 1125r/cr with a little wordplay ;).

I ride a Firebolt and came off a Yami FZR600, the bolt still rolls clip-ons but it has a much more upright position Iv never had sore elbo or wrists. The 1125 wont have the sound your looking for tho is my guess, but if power is what you want they are almost twice an XB12.

Either way its win-win for you bro, welcome to the forum. Bunch of good guys on this board, not much if any shit talking like the rest of internoob forums out there, and tons of usefull info. You must be a senior in highschool? The Buell will get you laid way more than the Yami too... lol

jraice,

Just out of curiosity I checked myself and figured I'd post a comparison link for ya in case you hadn't checked it yourself.

SS - Ride Ht. 30.6", Wheelbase 53.7", Fuel Cap. 4.4 gal.

Scg - Ride Ht. 28.6", Wheelbase 51.8", Fuel Cap. 3.82 gal.

Anyway...the link: SS to Scg Comparison But, if you can test ride, that would probably help you more than anything.

Thanks guys! And yeah definetly XB, the 1125 is a sweet motor but its less torque, more HP. Opposite direction then I want to go.

And yeah I may test ride an XB9, the cost is definetly right! I just think coming off an R6 and wanting this bike to last 5 years the 12 would be better.

And sounds like the Scg is the way to go... The only worry is the lack of suspension travel that the Ss has but I guess you guys think its no biggy...? The Scg just fits me great, I can easily flat foot it, seats comfy (probably would switch out for the City X seat though, a little taller and more cushion) and I really think the shorter wheelbase is the way to go but like I said, everything I hear about the Ss's suspension is tempting.

jraice, welcome to the forum...

don't do it for that bit more travel, it's of no use unless you land a wheelie to hard.
2mm is nothing as you need to stay atleast 2cm of dead end during hard breaking.

if you're still worried, get a hyperpro spring set...it's progressive and doesn't cost that much, but makes a world of difference in handling. ;)

Wait are you saying suspension travel is 2mm difference?

The diameter of the forks is 2mm difference the travel is more on the margin of inches I believe.

I guess Ill have to give both a try!

I personally have an 08 Scg with a drummer muffler(sounds awesome) and I love it. I'm 6'2", 195 and I'm probably just a little big for the bike but either way I was going to be uncomfortable so I went with the funner ride. The bike loves corners and I've never drug a peg on the ground, but I still haven't tested my full limits yet.

I thought I wanted and 09 as well because I like everything black but I'm glad I went with the 08. the rear section of the 09 looks cheap.

If you were coming off a Buell Ss to a Scg you might feel the difference in the travel and handling but coming off something like the R6 that little bit you will never know. I have a Ss and cant really imagine Scg being able to corner much better. Ss, more fuel and more room for the ladies but still just as sharp in the twisties.

here is my 09 Scg, I love that bike and I hope to keep loving it for a long time it's just the most fun on 2 wheels I had, well that and my SM I had before but wasn't good for long rides
