just picked up a 2006 Xb12Ss.. only upgrades i know of are
K&N filter
Jardine
Open air box
Breather re-route

She runs mean and strong but recently was riding and it just started sputtering out. no CEL, no Oil light nothing just sputtering and an angry hatred for RPMs. I pulled off the road and let it idle thinking maybe i missed the light and was overheating but nothing. shut off, turned back on and rode on home normally. ECM didnt show any codes when i got back home and checked. when the fan does come on i notice it seems like its robbing the engine of power (idle speed affected by the fan running. like AC to an old car) generally about 100-200 rpm idle speed making idle around 850-950. i made sure to do the normal things upon buying a used bike.
Plugs Looked normal but replaced with new
Fresh 20-50 mobile1 V-twin in swing arm as well as Primary. (oil came out black but clean magnets)
cleaned filter and checked brakes for grab and wear

curious if anyone had similiar things happen or advice on which direction to look. Im waiting for my cable so i can TPS reset and check the AFV, and am also planning to do some logging to track whats going on while i ride.
thanks so much for all the advice ive already pulled from this site.

checked the wiring to the pump and everything seemed good. tight and no corrosion.. i know my fuel sensor is a little messed so when this tank gets down ill pull the pump. it still seems to be heat related so hopefully i can get the heating issue solved. coming into riding season and i want to hit up the canyons!

Battery may be failing.. is it the original by chance? ..have you checked and/or cleaned all the (subframe, headstock) and 77 connector etc..

The wires along the pump, inside the frame, is where there are problems. If they are chaffed it would explain the running funny and your fuel sensor problem.

No idea on the fan affecting idle, sounds like there might be a short somewhere that is pulling more juice then normal. Fan motor could also be going out...........

ill check those too.. a local bueller told me that with the KN and the jardine i should richen the rear cylinder so it runs cooler using the ecmspy. anyone know of a good map to load for the KN / Jardine combo?

soooo... been messing with the bike more and more going through the trouble shooting as to why is get so dang hot...

Found a small exhaust leak and fixed that.
-Used propane to check intake, NOTHING
-tried ether around the seals. NOTHING
put an allan wrench on and checked... both were loose so i tightened them down for now. have new seals on order even though neither fuel showed increase in rpm.
Cleaned up some buildup onn the throttle plate that appeared to be messing with the ability to close.

ran smoother and popped less on engine braking/hard decel but still heats up and sputters adly/blinks cel and dies out. . let it cool and runs great again.

im gettin on the right track but still not perfect.

highest Octane we have around is 91 unless boost is added. :(
thinking this weekend will be dropping the arm and pulling the pump..

intermittantly acts up with heat and need to replace sensor anyways.. doesnt show low fuel except occasionally when i fill it up. [confused]

even tho i bought a bike and am already having to work on it i couldnt be happier with it... when its running great it runs GREAT!!!! and i cant wait till i can get this figured out!!

didnt find anything loose on the connections, still need to pull the fuel pump and check it out.. wouldnt explain the overheating but a bad connection or failing pump could cause the dropping out with no CEL.

Any one think to suggest head temp sensor? According to Al at Anericabsportbike its a common failure, if it sticks in one position like thinking its colder than it really is, fueling changes. Simple enough to check the service manual has specs for what it should be at what temp. Can easily be checked with a volt meter or ohm meter.

soo... i finally got pissed enough at those little gremlin bastards running around my bike i decided to stock up on beer and break her into pieces.. dropped the engine out and took swing off to get at things better and hopefully what i found will fix my problem... such a laundry list but here goes...
26XXX miles of shaking and vibration takes its toll.. MULTIPLE spot where insulation was rubbed to wire. most noticable were on the loom under the airbox. injectors, sensors, TPS
coming off volt regulator, underside as it comes up by connectors
at joint area from swing/subframe to main frame..

Fins were filthy on the rear above the bottom of frame. couldnt see easily until removed engine

wire on o2 lookes like it has been repaired before
fuel pump output? (to pin 3 on ecm) was replaced with what looks to be really shitty wire (maybe a road fix turned long-term/forgotten?

Fuel light would randomly come on and off and not tell empty thus forcing unwanted excercise on my second outing.[mad] level sensor wire hanging on by ONE strand of copper. no other wear spots on the pump.

cooling fan has some wobble so im plannin to replace that prior to riding..

got alot to clean and alot to fix. gonne get this thing put back together with a bit more protection against the vibration on wear spots.. with any luck there will be better... less hot times ahead..

what little ive had this thing on i love it.. wanted one for a long time and damnit... im gonna have it!!lol gives me a chance to show the girlfriend some garage time until she gets a bike of her own!!

Lol That's great that you found all that stuff dirtrider!! ... Because I think i'm gonna be doing the same thing as you soon and those spots you listed will be the very first spots I inspect for wear and tear ... Mine doesn't have any problems at the moment but I'm more into preventative maintenance than roadside repairs personally lol ... Also my XB was NOT taken care of at all by the PO ... I literally dug it out of the back of a shop ... in a few pieces ... on it's side ... with a THICK layer of dust on it ...

But now it runs like a freaking champ .... Love it .... Great post [up]

Great tipes, dirtrider!! Rains got me the the day off 2moro. Gonna be doing some serious inspections!! My rear cylinder runs hot too, so I took that heat tape and taped the under part of my seat in the front. And also made a idk what to call it maybe like a liner or a divider. Out of 1/16 metel wrapped it in that heat tape and it covers the top right rear cylinder, and tight up against the frame on the right side ( on the inside ). Also wrapped the exhaust and it deff helped!! Word of advice, while you have the bike apart. You want to wrap the exhaust now!!!!! Cauae it's a total bitch doing it, when the header is on the bike!

so.. almost put back together.. fixed alot of thing and ill try to post all in a new thread.. all i can say after all these little fixes is FIX YOUR BIKES CORRECTLY!!!!! do YOURSELF a favor and take the time to either fix something correctly or learn how to fix something correctly.. electrical tape is nice and those crimp fittings are quick.. but on a rattling bike thats the temp of the sun.. it dont cut it!!! hoping to be riding and squaring things up by tomorrow morning so ill know if it was an electrical gremlin or not.

All put back together. Started fine once primed. All diagnostics tested ok on ecm spy. Started her up and idled to check everything out. No codes thrown. Idled for twenty minutes and no overheat. Everything seemed ok with still air.. Took my first ride today. Upper 90s out with low humidity. Took back roads with alot of stop signs and low speed limits to try for overheat.. Nothing. Rode for over Assn hour in slow traffic, hills, etc. And no problems. Rode two up directly after for Assn hour and no fan while riding

as of now im calling it a success... rode two up all the way up a pass last night to enjoy a beer and some awesome pizza with the girlfriend.. no codes, no surging, no sputtering. Fan came on after i turned the ignition off. fan ran on high for about 30 seconds and on low for about a minute then off. no boiling fuel and my chestnuts were only medium rare!!!! ill do a full write up on where i found the problems and how i fixed them.. THANK EVERYONE ON HERE WHO HELPED ME and EVERYONE who posts info on here.. you all helped make my Ss worth every cent of the 2500 i paid for her.!
