Assuming I can find one, will any old o-ring work (with the same dimensions as the factory one) or do i need to use the OEM one?

You want one that's the same size and compatible with oil, if you use something other than the before mentioned, you're gonna run into problems such as possible oil leak due to o-ring getting pinched, cut, or snaps while trying to install it on the plug or the hole, deteriorate due to chemical make up of the oil attacking the rubber, you can use the old o-ring as a last resort, but beware of worn, flat, pinched or strands of rubber showing on the old one before reusing it, also before installing it onto the plug, lube it with clean oil or Parker lube.

I bought some from auto parts store and they work fine. I'll pull a part number when I get home for you. I don't remember which store it was, but it was either NAPA or O'Reileys because that's what we have in town. I'll post it this afternoon.

as lunaticfringe says they are both the same and HD usually has them in stock as they are the same as a sportser primary drain, same goes for your oil filter

not intending to open up the veritable "can of worms" here but i'd be very hesitant using tape on the swing-arm drain plug.

You made me check again. I really should get a new o-ring.

the ones at Lowe's (plumbing #41) are identical to the harley ones.....and ~$2.50 for 10
