I'd been drooling over Buells for about four years after riding my buddy's X1 and finally got my hands on my own - a 2003 XB9S. Love it. My purchase came with a few aftermarket items that I want to make sure I have dialed-in. I'm not looking for insane performance, but rather a solid performer that runs smoothly. Right now I'm experiencing some lurching in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. It's very intermittent, but it happens.

Here's what I have beyond stock:
1) Jardine carbon fiber exhaust
2) Daytona Twin Tec ECM Tuner
3) K&N air filter

I'm not sure if the ECM is dialed-in and have NO IDEA how to tune it. I downloaded the specs off of the website and simply don't understand the terminology or what it means.

Can I unplug the ECM and just roll with the stock, or do I need to somehow account for my increased flow from the filter and exhaust? OR should I tune the ECM? If so - what to do?

PLEASE HELP!

Ok you have to have your ECM hooked up. Personally I ordered a preprogrammed ECM from EBR. It was plug and play. I have no experience with the Daytona Tuner, but from everything I have read or heard was the only really good mode is the EBR ECM or recalibrate the ECM yourself. Hope this helps.

our ecms are made to learn from your riding habits/your environment around you(temp, altitude, etc..) and make necessary adjustments to your fuel/air ratio so you are not running too rich/lean. you might want to adjust your clutch for the lurching, change your fluids and see if that helps.

Oh yeah and do a TPS Reset. Remember It doesn't relearn quickly, give it some time.

First, thank you for your help so far. Great forum. The plot thickens...Here is some more information. I'm in Minnesota, trying to scrape out a few more rides before the snow flies - it's getting cold, in the ballpark of 45-50 on most of my recent rides...not sure if temp. may affect the issues.

I'm letting the engine warm for a couple of minutes before I hop on and taking it relatively easy on the front end of my ride. The bike is lurching/skipping in 3rd and 5th pretty much exclusively, but not always. The issue seems to fall between 3500 and 3700 rpm, but now I've had two bouts of the engine light, which has come on after about 15 minutes of riding. Any thoughts on what may be causing the engine light to come on? Other than the intermittent lurching/coughing everything sounds normal.

Thoughts?

I'm in ST.Cloud and have ecmspy. If you wanted to come my way I could sure take a look at it and give you some tips.
Matt

For good measure, give the battery connections and frame grounds a good once-over.

Since you're getting occasional CEL, you need to see if any of them are stored. Use ECMSpy or THIS method if no ECMSpy.

Thanks to all for your help. I took out the aftermarket ECM, changed fluid and plugs and it runs like a total dream. I suspect it may have been the ECM, but who knows. Ran it for about 150 miles at varying speeds for different lengths of time and all appears to be well. Nice.
