Trying to figure out what kind of dog I want to get.

Down to a Lab or German Short-Hair Pointer?

I have grown up with a lab, lovable dogs, pretty, well-mannered, etc. However, I like the "look" of a GSP more, and I like that they point.

I have heard GSPs are super high-strung and hard to manage. Anyone have any experience with this?

That is kinda what makes me want to get GSP. But I don't want a dog that I can't control. I live in Minneapolis, so I don't have a huge yard or anything. There is a parkway close, though, and we will be going hunting. But I just don't want a dog that is going to tear my house apart because it's too wild.

happy hunting

we have 6 dogs in our pack, my main hunting dog is Doobie a Blue Heeler/Catahoula mix, super intelligent, amazing tracking skills and pound for pound one of the hardest working dogs out there.
We have our tags for moose (MMMMMmmmmm) and a couple of deer, guns sighted, gear is ready and next weekend my wife and I are going out to kill bambi. :D

Eat game meat and support your local famers, stop buying factory farmed garbage meat....remember, you are what you eat!

Happy hunting

Baily, Doobie, Seka and Pecos...Bella and Puppy Puppy were elsewhere

if you take your time training a dog any dog will do the job some better then others. i have a pitbull boxer mix and he is amazing at retrieving he just has to do it in warmer water but if i shoot a squirrel or a bird in the woods he will have it at my feet with this lil nub wagging in 10 seconds or less. I also have a female pure bred pitbull that i have trained to scent track. it took about 3 years of on and off training but she helped me find a few deer. so if you want a good dog it isnt the breed that determines it. it is how well you train them that determines wether or not they are a good dog. if you intend on getting a dog chaining it up outside and then taking it hunting when ever you want and applying no training to it sorry to tell ya but it wont be worth a damn. train train train is the key with any dog. just my 2C

What are you looking to hunt? And what part of the country are you in?

Here's my GSP and my boxer.

You may want to think about a Pudelpointer too. The few I have been around were great dogs, both hunting and personality.

I had a collie/bordercollie mix that was great for pheasant hunting. I found her on the road never took her hunting since i don't hunt but my father in law took her once and came back and said I'm taking her every time. He's a big hunter and has 3 trained black labs but preferred my dog lol
