I just purchased my Lightning in October of last year and was wondering what kind of oil I should run come spring?
 
Royal purple, amsoil, and mobil 1 seem to be the favorites around here. Any of those are fine.
 
Every now and again Mobil 1 has a big sale on their oil. A month ago, Advance had 4 dollars of per quart! <--main reason why I use Mobil 1 for everything.
 
if you feel like your paying to much for it then thats the right oil, I personaly put amsoil in both my bikes. My performance car engine get rotella and the dd gets the cheapest crap I can find. I feel that as long as you select the right weight and use a quality synthetic you cant go wrong
 
im with everyone who says amsoil. the motor runs much smoother and you only have to do an oil change every season or every 10,000 miles. whatever you hit first. i do everything in amsoil and i dont regret it at all.
 
I work as a bike tech and do a ton of oil changes, Amsoil is the one oil that comes out looking almost as clean as it goes in. Primary being the exception there are way to many particles that come off and into the oil. Mobile 1 would be my second choice if I couldn't get my hands on Amsoil.

You shouldn't have a problem with regular Mobil 1. Many here say there are additives in the non V Twin oil that is not the greatest for our clutches, from the research I've done I cannot find a single case of damage from normal synthetic oil. Just my two cents.
 
Any problem running these oils in cooler climates, like Michigan? The temperature fluctuates enough in this state that I'm concerned about getting an oil that's too viscous. Any opinions? Or am I worrying about nothing?
 
I don't think so, most here run 20W50 but my owners manual calls for 10W30 or 10W40. You can go to a lower starting weight for the cold months, see how your bike like 10W40 Synthetic. I'm using Castrol Syntech and it's been great. 5000 miles since last change. I may try something different to compare but I rode mine in 110 degree heat over the summer and down to the high 30's recently.
