I remember something in my MSF class about never buying a used helmet, because you never really know the condition of the helmet and your life could depend on it. This leads me to believe that I may have trouble selling a helmet in the future if people are instructed not to buy used helmets.

Has anyone here every bought a used helmet or sold a helmet?

If so, what would be a fair price for a Bell Star? (Originally 500). Half priced? It’s a season old and worn for 4500 miles.

The only time I would ever buy a used helmet is if it was off of a friend I completely trusted to tell me that it's never been dropped/abused, and even then it would only be a helmet that I really really needed to have. I would much rather buy a $150-200 helmet than a used $500 helmet. I could see someone with a $600 motorcycle buying a used hjc for $30 if it was that or a bandana, but I'd still do my best to convince them to go to cyclegear and pick something new for $65.

Some states it is illegal to sell a used helmet for the mentioned above reasons.

Used is used no matter the price. Even a $500 helmet at $50 to me isn't worth chancing it. Sone others may disagree since it is just going from one head to another.

Even with that I go against it all and ride in a helmet I crashed in [smirk], went down but my head didn't hit the concrete just slide through the dirt and grass.

ive never sold a helmet, given quite a few away. if they have ever hit the ground just being dropped they go in the trash.

i'm agree with X on this and add yes used is used most people wear a helmet for protection of the most important thing they have their brain, (& some because of the laws) no worry and UNKNOWN is just not worth the price of a used helmet. I'd rather have a new helmet that was a cheap one than a used one of any price or value or great specs.

besides there are many of really great helmets with great feature and great protection that you can get at a very low discount at many stores & online stores some with free shipping too.

now with that said I may buy a used helmet only if it was of very high collectible and would keep its value & was part of an important event/race or and signed by certain people to only be put on a shelf for a collector/conversation piece and never to be worn. but cant think of any motorcycle helmets that fit that discription right now.

I am not saying people should buy a used helmet, but what if you buy from an online dealer and they ship it to you. How do you know that it didn't get a good smack while in transit? Or maybe the retailer dropped it off the shelf?

I was going to say "why not just donate it to the nearest MSF riders course " but they dont accept used helmets at all(from I have read).

WHY not just keep it as a back up helmet for when/if something happens to your new helmet ?? thats what i plan on doing when I buy a another helmet, dont wont to be without a helemt.

all or most have a return guarantee on them covering any shipping damage and they are very securely double box the hemlet with the main box the helmet is in has foam shaped to the helmet to protect it and between the two boxes is even more foam &/or air baggys to further protect it.

I know my Bell helmet from Sportbike Track Gear was triple boxed with padding between each layer, then in a fleece bag, the helmet is normal size but the outer box was big enough for me to ball up into! Thing could have dropped from a plane and still been fine[cool]

I guess the ruling from the panel is that I should not try to sell my helmet.....no one would trust the quality....and why would they? Serves me right for buying an expensive one that I only used for one season. I will keep it as a back up incase i every lose or damage my new one. Thanks for the input.

:)

you could get some squid on craigslist to buy a helmet that you shit in if it looked cool enough. might as well try and sell it, worst thing that happens is it doesn't sell. if you know you haven't crashed in it or dropped it you can feel confident that the person wearing it will be safe.

Keep it as a back up, you never know when some douche is going to steal one from you, then you don't have to run out and replace it right away.
