used ecm spy to do tps reset..and BIG PROBLEM

well,after getting my ecm spy V 1.12.27 and tried to do the tps reset according to the tutorial.
i had trouble getting it to show the tps readings at first..then i adjusted it to O and then tried to go to do the tps rest..would not show the tps moving..finally got it to work and set it to 4.6 and 5.1%..then saved the eeprom setting and closed it down..figuring all i had to do is start it and fine tune the idle screw..the bike barely ran..idled low and seemed like the tps way way off..unusable.
i have tried this several times and just cant get it to work as descrbed in the tutorial.
i have an 06xb12Ss..boy do i need help!

you dont need to do anything with the eeprom for a tps reset. you back off the idle adjuster so the plate bottoms out. then reset tps to zero. then you screw it in to 4.6-5.1% and fire it up. then back off the screw until the idle drops down to ~1000 rpm
 
maybe or it's how its sounds to me ... thats because you did not set the idle back to where it needs to be.......... did you set the idle while plugged in with ecmspy and verify the idle with the ecmspy screen and your tach or what???? sounds like you may have missed a step on the tps reset or your throttle is stuck somewhere or not closing all the way....



after you press reset TPS wait for it to say (onthe bottom of the ECMSPY window) tps reset comlplete or done. now turn the idle adjuster again until it reads 5.2 to 5.6 degrees . then you can start it up an let it warm up to 160C(320F) and then adjust the IDLE TO 1050 to 1150 RPM. that is all there is to it . and then you can do any tuning from there if want. hope that helps. please remember if the TPS is off then it effect everything else.

i did try adjusting the idle every way possible and it idled ok but when i hit the throttle it didnt run right..seemed like it would run if i revved it but if you held the throttle at one point it ran lousy or died.
the firdt time i didnt do anything except what the tutorial said..then i was thrinking i needed to save something..ok..i am an idiot when it comes to puters..i alway seem to need to be shown how to do a lot of things..duuuh!
 
hmm..thanks guys..i will try again..but every time i press tps rest it does not show the tps or rpms etc when i go to the screen that shows the gauges..cant remember how i got it to register again..but when i did i set the values to 4.6-5.1 and then started the bike..it ran like heck..maybe if i let it warm up all the way..i thought it was fully warm but i will check the temp..but still wierd that it has trouble keeping connected and registering the live info..(rpm,tps etc)
 
thanks native..i did not adjust the idle with ecm spay on..maybe that is my problem. i will check out the info you posted..thanks a lot!

DONT do anything until it says at the bottom of the ecmspy window that the TPS reset is done

got to have the keys clicked/pressed in and on , on the ecmspy program window/screen.
 
Understanding the TPS
The TPS is the Throttle Position Sensor. The ECM needs to know how open the throttle is, and in conjunction with the RPM, and atmospheric conditions, it knows how much air is flowing and hence how much fuel to inject. That is the essence of this tuning.
If the TPS value is incorrect, the ECM will provide the amount of fuel required for the wrong throttle setting and hence poor running will occur. A worse scenario is if you tune the bike with an incorrect TPS value, then any future correction to TPS will result in incorrect fuel maps.




did check to make sure no trouble codes was happening??


Checking the Trouble Codes
Time to check all error codes, make sure there are no real issues, then clear them! If anything is wrong when tuning, you should be able to check the error codes and make sure they are clear!!!









Resetting the Throttle Position Sensor
The TPS is an electronic sensor which can require resetting periodically. Before tuning your Buell it is important to reset the TPS to ensure accurate results.
First select the Gauges screen and connect to the ECM.
On the front left of the engine, between the airscoop and the engine is the Idle adjust screw, which simply adjusts the butterfly in the injector to allow air through for tickover. Adjust this screw until the throttle % drops to 0. Keep winding the screw out a bit further and hold the throttle closed with light clockwise pressure on the throttle grip.

Select the Functions tab on ECM Spy and select TPS Reset.
Wind in the idle adjust screw until the TPS is set to approx 4.6 degrees or 5.1% This should be approximately correct for tick over.
That’s all there is to resetting the TPS! Start the bike and check tick over is ok, adjust the idle adjust to get a steady tick over.



now with that said did you check and run all diagnostics and checking that everything is working correctly! on the diagnostics screen, do you have any trouble codes going on or an air leak somewhere!??
how Exactly was it running before this and why did need to reset the TPS??
 
also I do what the service manual says to do on tps reset too..

so when at this step on tps reset "Keep winding the screw out a bit further and hold the throttle closed with light clockwise pressure on the throttle grip."

I do this this per manual too " Back off idle adjustment until TP volts
stop decreasing and it should be at 0 degrees ,
then continue to back out one full
turn.
Open and snap shut throttle control grip 2-3 times."

NOTE
This is to ensure that the throttle plate is completely closed
before beginning recalibration.

then Select the Functions tab on ECM Spy and select TPS Reset. once it says done..
next..
Turn idle adjustment cable screw clockwise until TPS
degrees read 5.2-5.6 degrees.
Run vehicle until engine temperature is at 320 °F (160°C).
Set idle to 1050-1150 RPM..

See Figure 1-43. Regular idle speed is 1050-1150 RPM. Set
idle speed using idle adjuster. Turn adjuster clockwise to
increase idle speed or counterclockwise to decrease idle
speed.
 
ok..i am out of time tonight but will watch the video and try the reset again and set it to 5.2..i have the feeling it needs to be higher but i will start there and maksure the plate is closing etc.

ok..i did the reset again and set it to 5.3..i did it at 5.1. before.
this time i hit the top left button(keys) and i was able to register the tps again after the reset and then adjust it to 5.2.
then after it got up to 140 i set the idle..it seems to be holding rpm better without much surge..before it was surging like mad and kept dying.
so.. i am gonna go ut and ride it over 3k for about 20 minutes and see if it smoothes out.
the next trick is to get it to stop cutting out around 22-2700rpm..i did another post and am going to research how to richen it up on the fuel maps for the 2400 rpm range at low throttle..mainly i am wondering how much etc.
thanks again..and i i will post the final results when i got it dialed in.;)
 
well,i must say i am relieved to have it close to how it ran before the reset..but it is still running pretty ill when revved quickly off of idle.
it lags badly..almost dies and then takes much longer it seems to return to idle.
i guess i am going to try the afv reset and see if i cant totally screw it up..er i mean get it to run correctly. lol.
 
ok..did another very careful tps reset and afv reset after setting idle..ran it in closed loop for a bout 20 minutes again. seems a tad better at around the trouble zone near 2500 rpm..but when you back it off to idle and jump on it i think it sounds like it is getting raw gas dumped in..sputters really bad and nearly dies then finally picks up. it used to jump straight up and wheelie easy before the reset.
i am thinking maybe my plugs are a bit fouled after how bad it ran with the first reset..gonna get some irridiums..not sure of the correct number..but will see if cycle gear has a listing.

if anybody has any other ideas i would appreciate the input.

by the way,i did check the battery voltage in ecm spy and the grounds and battery connections seem perfect.
the only thing i am wondering about is when i was letting the bike warm up it never quite got to 100% with the cold enrichment..i think it was 100.3 then the fan came on when it was about 165 or 170 i think.
is this a problem?
no codes noted either.
ok..i guess plugs next..geez.
