OK just a fun question that we'll never get to the bottom of no doubt. Why are Americans so passionate about their guns? With the ongoing mass shootings we keep hearing about, us Brits to name only one country generally don't understand the passion it raises?

Think we can do better than that guys! ;)

I'm stealing this from a radio talk show host but I think it sums it up..."the 2nd amendment is the reset button of the constitution."

A weapon is a great tool for many things. Including defending the freedom our ancestors bled and died for. Could make this very long, but all in all it keeps freedom in the peoples hands.

I'm a little biased here, as I carry a weapon protecting the rights and freedoms of the U.S. on a daily basis. However, when I'm not in uniform, I carry a sidearm for my family's protection. We have a bunch of ungrateful people in the U.S. who would rather steal to get an easy buck for drug money, than hold a job to earn their keep. I will not hesitate to end some worthless robbers life. With the way our big boss is running things, who knows what he's gunna do with his remaining time in office.

because my family loves me and I love them. I hate to think about what they would do without me. The police and the government are not able to protect me (average 911 response time is 17 minutes) if someone decides to hurt me or them. They are counting on Dad to protect them. If I am not mistaken the violent crime rate per hundred thousand in Britain is about double what it is here in the U.S. even though you banned guns. The two scumbags that attacked one of your soldiers in the streets here a while back would have had a totally different outcome if he had the right to carry to defend himself. On the other point, the government is supposed to be representative of the people. I think the current administration is a long way off of doing that right now, and a lot of us are armed. We haven't went off the deep end trying to overthrow our government or anything, but if it does get bad enough, yes, it is a Constitutional reset button. I am prior service and my oath was to the Constitution not the administration.
:D:D

I find them fun and interesting, simple as that. I don't hunt (not a fan of killing beautiful nature), but like to shoot targets. I live in a safe city, but I do have my CCW. Carry maybe 10% of the time (should be more).

What makes the US interesting to me is that MAYBE someday (far-fetched) the armed forces could be overwhelmed, but good luck taking over unless the citizens want you here. I wouldn't expect anyone to be so stupid, including our own government.

The main thing is I find them fun an interesting though. They make loud noises. Wish I could find more places and time to shoot.

2 handguns
2 semi-auto rifles
1 shotgun

To the OP, don't believe the media about how guns have caused mass shootings.

It's the individual holding the gun, not the actual gun.

And did you know that most take place in "gun-free" zones. Why? Because the shit-f*ck that's pulling the trigger knows they can cause the most damage in a gun free zone (e.g.: schools) since no one should be armed.

I mean, if the shit-f*ck is hell bent on getting themselves killed, why not just show up to a police station and start shooting?

I have a good hand full of gun and there only use is hunting....
I have no clue how people claim self defence..90% of people would not be able to use it on another human anyway but if it makes them feel better to each his own.

I'm just guessing but I'm gona say most "mericans" are hillbilly that wana feel what having balls should feel like with a big boom..
Sorry but this new found "Mercia" stuff just makes every american sound like a fat ignorant gun blazin hillbilly that didn't make it past 3rd grade before they married there cousin.
We were taught to enunciate in school. Do it

Gun culture has been a huge part of America's roots since its inception due to the attempted confiscation of arms by the British government prior to/during the beginning of the American revolution. It was ingrained in our constitution and solidified by manifest destiny and the expansion west which was often dangerous and carrying a gun was considered necessary. There is also a large hunting culture, particularly in the south, that is still prominent in the states which keeps gun culture alive. There is a misconception by many that there has been an increase in gun violence as of late, mostly due to the media, when, in fact, there has been a steady decrease in gun violence in the States since its peak around 1995.

Guns can definitely be dangerous if wielded by those who have intent to harm but American culture focuses on maintaining the rights of the individual as a paramount objective even if reducing individual rights may provide "security" to the masses. It is just the way our country is structured. I don't feel that it is necessarily better or worse than how other countries operate. We have our reasons for protecting those rights and other countries have their reasons for limiting them. This coexistence of differing ideological beliefs is what makes this world great.

Guns aside, there seems to be a much larger problem of middle class desperation and mental illness. I'm not sure that America is the "land of opportunity" it once used to be.

At the core of this topic is the idea of freedom. Do they revoke the drivers licenses of everyone because over 100k deaths happen every year by drunk drivers? Or make riding a motorcycle illegal because when accidents occur there is a higher likelihood of serious injury? No. We are adults and are expected to make adult decisions. You don't infringe on the rights of everyone because a very small percentage of people abuse their freedoms. And for those that do abuse freedom, their freedom should be revoked.
We all know how tragic it is that innocent people have died, and we mourn with their families; however, it was very few men with very few guns that are themselves guilty, not the 40%+ Americans wielding nearly 300,000,000 weapons in a safe and legal manner every day.

Additionally, there are many rational arguments, based on fact, to prove that possessing weapons is actually SAFER than disarming - at least for the individual.

"God created man, but same Colt made them equal."

With the ongoing mass shootings we keep hearing about
what you dont hear is the part prescription drugs play in these shootings.

There are more, I've posted pics in the other gun thread. I like the freedom of being able to buy what I want, when I want and without someone telling me that I CANNOT have a weapon as good as what the military or local police department has. Average response time for them to respond is more than 5 minutes, I (family included, they can all shoot effectively) will NOT be victims. IF it so happens that I DO get killed in the process, I will take at least one or two down with me, hopefully it never happens. However, I try to be prepared. It's kinda similar to wearing gear for riding. You'd much rather have it and not need it, than find out a split second too late that you wished you were wearing full gear as your ass slides across the pavement at 60+ mph. If you want to take your life in your own hands and not wear gear, that's YOUR perogative. Do not infringe on MY rights though, I opt to both wear gear and carry concealed whenever I can.
