Pulled the trigger today on a 2008 XB12R to supplement my FZ-09 daily commuter. Bought a new Ulysses back in 2007 and sold it after only a couple years and have been kicking myself ever since. Now I have another Buell back in the garage. Found this guy the first day it was posted on Craigslist and jumped on it. The 1 owner seller was 250 miles away and was kind enough to hold it for a week until I was able to get a pickup and make the trip.

It has 11,800 miles and is basically stock except for the stock can being opened up, rear signals, and a K&N filter. The 3 pics the seller posted looked so good I took a chance and traveled the 250 miles and picked it up after a quick test run and thorough inspection.

Only issues after getting it back this afternoon are a loose throttle (owner didn't even notice), low rear brake pads, and a couple of wires where insulation has worn through. The shop that helped me unload it when I got back to Clearwater (Harley and custom choppers) were amazed at the condition it is in. When I suggested maybe to leave it with them to to a thorough checkout, they laughed and said just ride the hell out of it and come back if there's a problem.

I combed through this forum and I have to say, it put me over the edge and helped me pull the trigger fast. It's a Buell, so I know there will be issues. I look forward to tapping into the massive amounts of knowledge and experience this forum provides and maybe hope to contribute.

Nice to be back, Buell. Here she is...

It's a Buell, so I know there will be issues.

to purchase equipment knowing that problems abound and lurk upon ones horizon is the sign of a true infidel. attention shall be paid.

Sorry lunaticfringe, didn't really mean it that way... poor communication on my part. Anyway, my first "issue" is with the rear brake light. I have to press with full force to get the rear brake light to go on. I scanned the forum and came across this post of yours...

your 2003 XB uses a front nissin switch unique to that year and only fits 2003 XB and the 2000-2002 tuber models. it has the wide-spaced spade terminals. as with any other electrical switch they can fail. properly test it by removing the 2 wire plugs exposing the blade terminals...get an ohm meter...attaching the ohm leads one to each blade...and activating the brake lever. you should hear a light "click" and see the ohm-meter reveal the same reading to you as it would if you touch the ohm-meter leads together. the rear brake light switch is activated by pressure generated within the master cylinder. it is a pressure style switch. if sporadic in operation you can remove it and try to thoroughly clean the inner workings...and also check the little harness that goes up to the under seat area and plugs into main harness. that plug does occasionally corrode and a good cleaning solves it. if these 2 things don't resolve the problem the switch is at fault.
2003 XB front switch fits that year XB only. part # Y0820.9 also crosses over to honda part # 35340-MM5-

Is it the same deal with the XB12R (2008)? Thanks... and by the way, you are the last guy on the forum I want to rub the wrong way. :). For what it's worth, the "issues" I combed through on this forum at length before my purchase are insignificant compared to the awesome factor of this bike.

^^^^^^ sir: that was just me impersonating our beloved ich who occasionally trolls the board in both english and german jibberish. not rubbed incorrectly in the least. YES to your question. all XB's have nissin master cylinders front and rear. very straight forward items. the rear has a pressure switch to activate brake light....the front a little analog type button switch. tell-tale sign of rear switch on the way to switch heaven is abnormally heavy pressure to activate it. test your rear brake light switch as i mentioned in your copy and paste....cleaning the switch pressure port seldom works....they're reasonably priced. test bulb with ohm-meter...test bulb and socket and wiring circuit by turning key on....red run switch can be on or off.....and with small piece of wire connect the 2 rear master cylinder switch wires. light activates? faulty switch.

 Thanks.

Nice welcome aboard. I had an FZ-07 and it just did not compare to my Buell, so I sold it and was lucky enough to be able to buy back my Buell
