Alright so I am going to start data logging and tuning with xopti next week so I want to finalize all mods on my bike. I have a K&N on my bike, but I have yet to open up the airbox. I was about to start hacking away, until I began thinking about it. I have an '05 so I still have the hole in the frame. By deleting my inner airbox, the outer airbox will then become its new "cover" if you will. Unless i vent the out air box cover I don't think this mod will provide me with anything but more noise. Does this make any sense or am I missing something here? I see why this would be very beneficial to the newer bikes that don't have the hole in the frame, but for the '05 I have second thoughts.

The inner airbox delete does make the intake pretty loud. dave_xb12r did it the other weekend, and oh my, what a difference.

I've always wondered, can the '05 fit a newer style airbox cover with the intake in the front like my '09?

that would be a 'really open' airbox :)

Yeah it definitely can fit, a lot of people do it.

Without getting a newer cover, or venting my cover, I just don't see the benefit for the '05. I am just trying to get some other view points and opinions.

oxygen, ideally, you'd want to do what kajer mentioned. Put a newer outer cover on, or just cut the vent out of yours. The question is, how handy are you?

Just like this

Plenty handy. I've been toying around with that idea, but I'd like to get some mesh that matches the stock mesh on the new covers. I found some but I'm not sure if I'm going to go through with it.

I guess i will re-word my question a bit. If i do not vent my outer cover, is doing an airbox delete on an '05 with the hole in the frame beneficial at all as far as performance goes?

Why would this not be beneficial? On the 05 the scoop and the hole in the frame are to direct air into the airbox. On later models the vent was added to the outer cover but the hole was closed on the frame. In my opinion its one or the other, they both do the same job. when you do the airbox delete mod it still needs air intake and both setups allow this.
Also the outer cover does not fit snugly to the frame so air can still get into air filter area.

I think it would be beneficial if you also vented your air box. The way I look at it right now is, air is being directed from a scoop, and forced into a sealed box. If I open it, i am still going to be sucking air from the hole in the frame, and maybe a little bit around the edges of the outer cover and get a lot of intake noise. Until I vent my cover, I think im going to take a pass on the air box delete.

the closer an object is to the air filter, the more restrictive it's going to be. If you are re-mapping, there isn't a reason to NOT do the delete...
