I have two 2009 xb 12s. A firebolt with 5000 miles and a lightning scg with 3500 miles. I had the new map where the fan runs more often done to the lightning but not the firebolt. I've noticed absolutely no difference in mileage or temp. My usual mileage is between 38 and 43. I'm 5'6" and 175lbs. So that's not a factor. The mileage bugs me too, but the fan map isn't the solution. It's actually just annoying.

guys, it's a 1200cc engine...don't go and compare it to a 650 or 600.

average should be around 40mpg on a standard map 1200 buell with no highway miles. if you do alot of freeway/highway, non varied speed rides, your mpg will be better.

with my alterations, best i get is around 42 and my worst is around 30 :p

i am averaging 56 mpg
that was with a k&n Jardine pipe with quiet insert and the Remus powerizer .
I have to recheck it now after 17000miles my jardine has fallen apart and i reinstalled my stock pipe . Now i need another long trip to see what i get ..
2009 xb12 ss hero blue with 18000 miles

2009 XB12Scg, 6500 miles, the only mod I have done is the breather reroute, and I get 50mpg consistently. I do a lot of 55mph speed limit country roads, but I crank it on for the curves and passing people.

way, were you always getting 56mpg, or has it been getting better with more miles?

Having fun on my 03 xb9s got no less than 45mpg usually got 50mpg.

I average about 46MPG on my 03XB9s as well but I cant stop myself from going wide open throttle :D

RPM and throttle position determine fuel consumption more than any other factor. try picking a higher gear when cruising in town, your bike has enough torque to power through it.

No i think i kinda started out about 40- 45 mpg and it has progressed to where it is now

That is what I was guessing. These motors seem to gradually get better mileage. I started getting lower 40s as well. On my latest trip, I did 160 miles on a tank (still no fuel light), 55mph and down to 25mph through small towns, and I got a good 53mpg. [up]

I'll throw my numbers 09xb12r got it this last march 4170 miles currently.

March 31.16 mpg
April 31.9 mpg
May 37.08 mpg
June 36.17 mpg
July 35.38 mpg
August 32.67 mpg

I have been getting ~30mpg for the last 10 months. During which I put on 8000 miles. So much for better with more miles. Mybike had issues, however.

Multiple tries to start and stay running, adaptive fuel would auto adjust Down to 85 every time they test drove it at the shop.

They replace everything (oil pump, cylinders, injectors, o2 sensor, etc. Etc. Finally got to the fuel pump and the bike came back with an adaptive fuel value higher than when it left. Bad regulator was pushing fuel past the injectors, causing a rich condition. I am currently testing the bike for starting issues, and keeping an eye on the mpg cat the same time.

Pannillier: did you have starting issues as well? I'm hoping this fixes my 30 mpg issues, which are patently ridiculous. If I wanted to refill every 115 miles, i would have kept the sportster...

I am not impressed with my '09 12r millage.

Average is ~30
Max is ~38

I expected more. It has not gotten better with time. Just hit 4300 miles.

{edit}
On second thought, its most likely due to me not going 50 in the slow lane. :p

'09 XB12Scg with almost 20k miles and I get exactly 40mpg in town (I am on the throttle a lot and don't watch it at all), and 50-55mpg when touring (mellow on the throttle and constant speeds).

I use my 2010 XB9SX mostly for commuting. I need to drive slowly inbetween the cars in 1st or 2nd gear. Sometimes the traffic will open up and I can get up to 5th or 6th gear. Sometimes I'm hard on the throttle and reving it real high. I'm usually getting 40 - 45MPG driving this way. It has gone up about 5MPG from when it was new 10 months ago.

6th gear?

I fill up about every 120 miles, but the riding I do, I rarely get out of 3rd gear.

Just returned from a 230 mile trip. I have an 09SS with a Jardine. I did the 5,000 service on Friday. Put NGK Iridiums, Redline Oil, and Primary Oil in. I weigh 205lbs and had my trunk bag packed! I filled up with 168 miles on the tank and it only took 3.5 gallons. I was running no less than 80 MPH most of the ride with about an Hr running over 90 and still got 48mpg.

08 cg and I get high 30's most of the time. The mpg doesn't bother me as much as having a range of 100 miles.
