I bought an 09 Firebolt XB12 with only 126 miles on it. When I got it the bike ran fine. I didn't have a chance to take it on the road because I was shipping off to Iraq but every time I come home I start my bike. The last time I was home I started the bike and let it run for a while then I heard a loud noise that went on for a while and then bike shut off and wouldn't start. This is my first bike and I need some help. I coming home soon and looking forward to riding so I want to get this fixed asap. Thanks for your help.

Where are you in Iraq? All troops are sposta be outta there. How many times have you come home to start it. Every time i have been deployed I could only come home once.

Your discription is pretty vauge, but it dosnt sound like it will be an easy fix then ride, If you wish to ride it soon as you get home your best bet is to have it sent to a shop while you are gone. If you could give us more info we may still be able to help.
Thanks for your service, and good luck.

Welcome to the forum Reese. As a Reciently Retired Marine of 26yrs, thank you for your Service. I will try to put some ideas towards your problem.
Since this is your First bike please take some notes and you will be suprised how easy the Buells can be With some Decient Maintenance.
Don't let this long Posting worry you there is somthing to learn ABOUT any machine you Purchase. Buells are fun and great handling Bikes. You will need to Set up the Suspension for your weight. You also CAN'T Blip the Throttle like a Foreign Bike, so Smooth is best right now, so here goes.
BUT first lets get you towards the Engine Idling Properly!
First have you [reset] your TPS-Throttle Position Sensor, it can be reset by a Key Turn Method along with Twisting the Throttle properly, you can find the Procedure here on the Forum.
Any time you start the bike you need to LET it Idle for a few minutes especially if it has set for a week or more 08+ Buells! Check your Fuel and if it has been sitting for a while then it [may] need to be changed. Fresh Fuel and just a small amount of SeaFoam(please read the directions)with a full tank will keep the injectors from clogging from sitting while you are away.
Also Check your Battery and the Terminals the Starter Could be jamed from low voltage. There are several areas of interest to check [all easy] to do. If your battery has been sitting more than Several Months with no maintenance done to the Battery then might want to remove the Battery and have it load tested OUT of the bike. Some Auto Parts Stores will check that for free.
Never JUMP Start the Bike with a Diesel vehicle. If you must jump start the Bike then Jump it with a Vehicle (Single Battery vehicle) NOT running at all. The Stock Battery is only 200/CCAmps and wouldn't take much to fry something in an Electrical area. Charge your battery before you try to start it so as to have the power to get it going.
The Same rules APPLY when using a Battery Charger. No Boosting, Let the charger do it's job, remove the cables and then start ,this way if there is a [problem] you don't Know about the Jumping OR Battery Charger won't make the problem Way Worse than it could be!
It's easy to UnPlug the Low beam Light on the Firebolt for more starting power. You don't need to but when checking it helps for a little more power. If you have a meter and get the Engine running most likely you will need to test (check)the Charging system once you get the bike to Idle properly. YOU will need to get a 27/Torx bit forc removal of the seat. When Reinstaloling the seat once done in that Area jusrt Snug those Bolts.
On a XB12R 08+ Buells the Stock Idle is at 1'100/RPMs, AND the Volts AT Idle will be 12.3 to 12.6-and will climb as the RPMs go up.
Remember the Newer Buells need the TPS reset more often than the Older Bikes.Do NOT Twist the Throttle if you are Trying to start the Engine 08+ buells, the ECM takes care of the Idling and resets every time you start the Bike.
IF you have Twisted the Throttle while starting then the TPS needs/ HAS to be done!
Never touch the Throttle when Starting the bike(Especially) a new one!
The TPS- Key Turn Method is easy to do and if you need that post up and one of us will post it for you.
I reset mine on my street bike 08/XB12R every TWO fillups so my bike Idles properly. The 09 XB12R I have is not Streetable it rides Tracks only but TPS has to be done Regularly!
I don't wait till it runs badly due to I just might need to Throttle out of a situation and it would SUCK if it spit and coughed causing something to happen that I could have prevented with a Simple task as an TPS reset! There are many other Tricks for in case you flooded the Engine, BUT we will start here with the Basics First! Hope this gets you in the Right Direction. Small Things First!*Jimi[cool]

I am no longer in the service, I am working in AFG as a civilian. I've been able to start my bike 2 within the last 1 1/2 years. The last time I started my bike it ran fine. I rode it around my underground garage and parked but kept it running. After running for a while it starting making a loud whinning noise that lasted about 2 minutes the then bike shut off. I tried starting it again and although it would turn over the bike wouldn't start. This is my first bike so I have no clue what the problem could be. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Jimi thanks for all the advice and congratulations on retiring from the Marines! I was Navy. Sometimes I wish I had stayed in, only had 11 years to go. The last time I was home I had to jump the battery and I didn't know that I should have the car running. I started fine and everything seemed to be working fine until about thirty minutes later when my bike shut off. Do you think the jump could've had something to do with my bike making the loud noise and then shutting off?

Try some of the tips I posted here and there are manuals here on the foum to read. The Whinning MIGHT be Fuel pump Related from bad fuel or something of that Nature. I don't know your skills level but it sounds like it possibly needs freah fuel and if you are stuck you may need to take it to the Dealer. Check your OIL level also Before you Start the Engine. HOPE they are Buell Friendly. Read up first and go from there. Good luck! *Jimi

that makes a bit more sence Reese.

Shot in the dark here but maybe it just overheated.
I think the running it for a while led to the fan turning on (whine you heard) then it shut off to prevent dammage. You can crank and crank but it wont start till it cools off.

I have done thiss a few times while living in Cali... The high desert inland empire area was terrible on an air cooled bike. I even Overheated it on Las Vegas Bvld, after dark...
Also in the Sequoia Nat Park. That time took an hour of me fanning the bike with my jacket to start it.

I think this may be your problem... good luck

Jimi, I think he just over heated it and it shut off. I would never drive mine as he described... I have been left on the side of the road too many times overheated

Thanks Mark. Hopefully it's something that simple! When I get home next month I'm going to change all the fluids, oil and fuel, replace the battery and give it a shot. I used to live in Vegas. I know it sucked when your bike overheated on Vegas Blvd! It's sounds like I'm in for the same experience.

could you remember if the whine you heard could have been a fan?

If you stay clear of traffic it is fine, never overheats. Its traffic that kills everytime. I mean stoplight traffic, not conjestion that keeps moving.

I was close to turning right and jumping on the 15, cause i noticed the signs but i was just too late. made the turn and conked out[sad] 15 min later it started, and onto the highway i went for a cool down ride

Yes I remember that Desert Heat dang! Three Tours worth.Mark also has a point if the fan runs constant while Idling on the Kickstand for a prolonged time then that MAY cause the Engine to overheat when just sitting there. Try the Tips posted First. There are other areas to cover but Small things First.
Don't let it Overwelm you it is a New Thing for you and This Forum is here to help.
Make sure to Start the Bike and you will need to get some air into her for cooling the Front Cylinder as well as the rear HAS the Fan.
With the Key OFF Remove the SEAT and look down into the Fans area.CAN you gently spin the Fans Blades? NO Oil on the Blades? No Noise made from the fan? If all looks good you can Install the seat. See if you can Restart the Engine after it has sit for a bit. SAY 20/minutes. But you need to Check the oil After the Engine has warmed up for maybe 4/minutes. Shut off and wait about a minute. Make sure the Area is Clean around that area when checking the oil level. You will see the Cross hatched area for the oil level. You may even need to Change the oil filter if it has been on there Since it was NEW then Napa OR Dealer will have one.
Some Cheaper Oil Filters will [Degrade] over time. The oil also could be Contamanated.Might not want too let it idle like that on the Kick Stand a long time. NOT good for the Engines and Oil Pump while leaning like that.
Especially if the Orignal Oil is still in it! Amsoil is best for These Engines 20/50 in the Engine and 20/50 in the Transmission. The Transmission only Holds ONE Quart.I wouldn't worry about the Transmission at this time. NO Speed Shifting on the Xb Models of Bikes. Just get it running and reset the TPS first. Post up if you need something else.*Jimi

Mark what year is your bike? there is a Reflash for the ECM to stop the problem described. It will make a big difference!A Right Side Air Scoop will also help to lessen the heat issues with Air Cooled Engines. The Ulysses Comfort Kit will Bolt on Easy in 20/minutes. JUST leave OFF the Rear Cowling that goes to the fans area, it is for the Ulysses and not needed on the Engines rear Cylinder.
The Kit comes with a heat Shield for the Rear Header to keep the Heat OFF the Right Side of your leg. Exhaust Header Wrap will also make a Big Difference. Not Needed but works.
IF you don't want the Right side Scoop on the right.Go through the Forum and read up on the Mods Section and check out about the Reflashing of the ECM. It is a good fix for the Heat Issues.Especially the 08+/ Reese don't worry about the Reflash yet lets just get you riding! Well I got to get back to work the Shop is full of bikes check back in a day or so. Good Luck*Jimi

'08+ TPS Reset Procedure:

- Turn on the key.

- Set the kill switch to the run position.

- Don’t start the engine. Rotate the throttle from fully closed (gently forced closed) to fully open (gently held open), and then back again to closed (gently forced closed).

- Repeat 2 times for a total of 3. Hold each position (fully open, fully closed) for 1 full second.

- Turn the key off and on.
