So what's the best course for an 03 looked at ASB and it appears that for the 03 the neutral safety switch will not operate with the upgrade

I was going to update that if you go the bolt/sleeve direction and you use a 2" bolt you will not have to cut the sleeve down and you'll have a little thread on the backside just in case it ever happens again. You won't have such a hard time getting the threads out.

i'll try again, use a 2" bolt instead of a 1.5" and you will not have to cut the sleeve down, and you'll have a few threads through the back side of the stand incase the bolt were to ever break. You can get the broken threads out easier. Anotherwords, its plug and play, no fabing or grinding. I went this route cause the local harley shop said it would be 10 days for order, and they wear out anyhow. Hope this helps.

That is no real upgrade though. That is just a direct replacement of the pin with the same weak point. If you use that option get a grade 8. I would not trust a stainless fastener like that guy used on badweb that's for sure.

The upgrade highlighted in this thread uses a large diameter pin with no threads at all and is a much better option.

Yeah. The bolt and sleeve isn't an upgrade. The upgrade is lack of threads, lack of skinny bolt and a stout machined pin with e-clip . No bolt to break, back out, or threads to strip. The pin is much stronger than a bolt, especially a stainless bolt.

This is an old thread but I bought the upgraded side stand kit.

i wouldnt mind having someone who purchased the full kit measure the width on the back to verify but look at these pics.

The new style stand is 3/32" thicker than the old on the inside. I don't think that would matter much. The problem was always the bolt backing out, or the bolt breaking. To the best of my knowledge the actual stand never split.

3/32"

So, was there a replacement s-clip for the '03 model since in order for this to work? No sidestand spring extension P/N?

Bump
Thanks for asking this thrstrmech maybe I can get this resolved before I find my bike on its side

obvious question would be does an 04+ s clip fit on an 03 stand? You guys with the 03's need to figure this out. I dont have one so its pretty hard to figure out whats different.

It would have been easier if Buell had identified the affected 74 units by serial number, maybe they did know and HD held out the info to make more money by selling the kits? The recall only affected the '03 9SL model manufactured between February 18th through March 5th 2003. With that said, mine could be affected...however the only thing available to go by is the date of manufacture tag on my bike which is Feb 03.

Is there a way to find the actual date?

Side stand plate extension (S hook) for the 9S and 9SL are the same P/N: L0203.02A8. The new kit does not list it.

So, those of you who have done the mod on your bikes, by year models, what is the part number for the plate extension? Let's see if there are different, look at your parts catalogs in the "Frame" section, it will be directly above the sidestand bracket assembly.

the mod in this thread only changes the pin. All the other parts are original equipment so Im not sure what you are asking about the kit. You can just look up the stock part numbers.

Yes, I understand that, but the issue came up where the "S" hook does not seem to fit after the pin is installed on the '03 model, hence the further discussion on the matter. Could be due to the design and having a sidestand switch, I don't know cause I haven't done the mod...yet.
Call me cautious, but I like knowing what's involved in any mod before doing it. Have read of many people having issues after doing a mod, more than likely due to having tunnel vision and the mentally of "I want it, like yesterday" on my bike and not doing the research or following the instructions step by step, generally speaking.

Ok, here's the scoop.. the recall was ONLY for the sidestand on the '03 9SL models NOT the pin. I have a pdf of the recall that clearly states the sidestand has potential to bent or break. All the existing parts are reinstalled after the leg has been replaced. The new sidestand P/N: 94218Y, per B-052 dated April 15, 2003, Safety Recall Code 0826, SideStand Leg For 2003 Lightning XB9SL. Issue solved.

With that said, this no longer affects me, since swapping out my suspension and sidestand for the standard setup.:D

Also there was a recall on the XB9R for the same thing, P/N: 94129Y and can be identified by an "R" stamped on the foot base of the sidestand and pin where the spring attaches to per B-048 dated October 11, 2002.

I second that ngreely, did this mod and significantly more sagging. took it to machinist after squeezing slight bend in the 'ears' on the kickstand to square wouldn't 'stay' when under weight, shop guy said ears probably likely can't be bent back due to metal fatigue.
Any experiences like this?
Damn HD dealership wants $121 for kickstand alone.
Any bike salvage places you'll used to find parts? ebay only gives me the pre-2007 kicstand with threaded end.
