last year the bike all sat overnight after filling up the night before. in the morning started and ran like ****. the bike sputters but i can keep running by messing with the throttle but eventually dies. put new gas in and tried again, still ran like ****. didn't know what to do i so brought it to the shop. they said it was bad gas. so i picked it up. ran well for a while then all of a sodden ran like **** when i started it up again. drained fuel and put new in. this did not help so i replaced spark plugs and checked all connections; still not any better. thought it could be the battery so bought a new one and no difference. i got frustrated and just tried to ride it to see if it would just work its self out and some how it did. it just kicked and with tons of power and was ok. this happened once more last season and i got it to magically fix its self. from then on i was careful about what gas i used and i made sure i added stabilizer everytime i filled up. the bike ran well for the rest of the season. now this spring i went to start it up and its running like **** again. i know there is something wrong but i don't know what could happen all of a sudden then sometimes fix its self. since then i have drained completely of gas. added fresh fuel with liquid horse power. fixed the rubber boot that plugs the emissions port that is not used on the throttle body. i have replaced the throttle position sensor. i have checked all fuses and cleaned up all connectors on relays. none of this has helped but one strange thing that happened is that now to crank the bike over the clutch needs to be held in? if anyone has any suggestions for me before i have to bring it to the shop again would be much appreciated. planing on replacing the injectors to see if that fixes the problem.

has your CEL illuminated after start-up? for the money you'll be spending on shop time and the injector replacement you mentioned you might be better served purchasing ecmspy and patch cable for your 2003 and running a full diagnostics check. if you replaced the tps unit as you mentioned you or someone had to run ecmspy to reset it. just curious.

^ tps reset and check for any codes

when you turn the ignition on, how does the fuel pump sound during priming? loud whine? wonder if the strainer filter has disintegrated and partially blocking the pump inlet. have you checked the fuel pressure? maybe time to remove the fuel pump assembly, replace the pump and both filters. this is merely a guess on my part, but wouldn't rule it out as the cause or maybe a secondary cause for the issue. also make sure the spark plug wires to coil are properly attached/seated, another possibility.
check the connection of the clutch switch, is the locking tab broken that secures the connectors together? any corrosion on either side of the connector terminals? is a terminal pushed out of place? is the little button on the switch that the clutch lever pushes on broken? ...things to look at before you decide to take it to a stealership

so the fuel pump sound good every time i turn the key. it seems to prime well every time. i have not noticed any lights after starting. i am not the most computer savvy this is why i have not gotten the ecmspy yet, but it definitely sounds like thats what i need to do so i guess that is what i will do. i have read that there is a download that you can use and then change it to english through some steps. is this what i should do? oh and i replaced the tps because i do not have the program to reset it.

and thank you everyone for your help.

You may want to post where you're located. Just city and state!
You never know, you might have one of these tech savvy guys in your area. AND You might get real lucky and they might help you out!

good idea thank you. i am in lee new hampshire. so the portsmouth durham area. if anyone is local that would be awesome. even just to ride once its going.

BTW after replacing the TPS it needs to be reset using ECMspy and communication cable.
I believe replacing the TPS may have added to your issues.
Just start researching how to videos on ECMspy and TPS resets. If I can learn how to do the basic stuff ANYONE can!
Good luck

ok i was wondering if i needed to reset a new sensor. thank you i will do that as soon as i get the cord. should i just get that from american sport bike?

so i started doing some research on the tps reset and in the youtube video after you reset it you have to start it and let it warm up then adjust the idle but my bike won't run properly to start with. I'm i just simply clicking the reset button on the computer and thats it?

when you "reset" the tps....you tell the ECM that the current location of the TPS is to be aligned with the ECM's location for fully closed throttle.

that means before you "reset" the TPS, the butterfly HAS to be in the fully closed position. thats why you back out the idle adjusting screw prior to pressing the "reset" button.

once it has its reference you can then begin to open up the idle adjuster screw to the 5.1-5.5 degrees (i think thats the range IIRC) to get it started. then you finalize the idle speed after the bike is at operating temp.

its very simple once you get the process right.

I'm i just simply clicking the reset button on the computer and thats it?

procedure is this for 2003-2007 XB tps sensor reset:
1-bike at room temp
2-turn on ignition switch...needles sweep...turn red run switch to on...pump prime...and either connect 5 amp battery charger to battery during this usage or at minimum remove headlight fuse
3-go to your ecmspy program and you want the screen that has tach and speedo representation along with 4 other round gauges on that screen. be sure to go to toolbar top of page and click on professional tab.
4-blip throttle several times and you will see the bar graph at bottom move. it is blue colored. this confirms bike and ecmspy are communicating with one another.
5-look to the motor side of the left ram air scoop. see idle speed adjustment wheel? find suitable allen key and insert into it. back it out which is counter-clockwise. watch computer screen. see the large number centered directly below your blue graph? as you turn out your adjusment screw the blue will disappear on the bar and the # will go to 0. blip throttle several times to confirm you have reached 0. following that give the screw an additional 2 turns counterclockwise MAX.
6-NOW CLICK TPS RESET TAB.....click yes to confirm. DO NOT START THE BIKE
7-now turn the screw inwards which is clockwise until you see 5.1 on the screen. turn bike off
8-now start bike...get some heat in the motor...adjust the same screw until you achieve approx. 1000rpm. now ride in learn mode and readjust the screw as necessary to keep warm idle speed around 1000rpm. that is the idle speed i like...choose what suits you.

well this was my question. the bike will not even think about idling so how am i to do this reset?

Ouch, John...LOL

:D back at cha' yass after i revisited that. could be construed as keyboard tough guy comment.
should be: follow my directions closely that i posted for you. post-haste your bike won't idle? there's another problem that needs addressed.

i didn't mean to sound stupid or disrespect you. i really appreciate your help. i just saw step eight where you get the bike to operating temp then set the idle. so for clarification i will do all other steps prior then continue to figure out why it runs so bad. once it runs ok will set the idle to 1000rpm. i found a cord online so now i need to hunt down a pc to use then i will download the program. i have got the parts needed to do the fuel pump and filter in the mean time. i also have new injectors on the way. i figured while i have the rear end taken apart i should just replace the o2 sensor for the 14 dollars. if i do this is there anything i need to do on ecmspy after that sensor is replaced?

you're not and you didn't.

no.
when you get your computer and spy and cable all set up and attached to bike and communicating that is when you follow my steps i outlined for you. from that point on the bike should start and run and idle decently. if not as i mentioned another problem persists and we'll try and help you diagnose what it might be.

lots of great advice above,I just bought another xb9r and it started off with the same problems,I cleared codes, reset tps, and it still ran crappy, sucked out old gas put new gas in with some aditives to help clean internals, and fooled with it, and undone all the riggen, finally got to the oil, checked it after bike was hot, and it just poured out the fill hole,.It was over full big time, after draining it and puttin the right level in it, it ran pretty good, just gotta fix the intake leaks now. Basically too much oil was bogging it down.
Hope you get yours fixed and running.
But patiance and help on this forum should get just about anybody up and running with out throwing alot of cash at it.
