I recently bought a 2004 Firebolt xb12r and the brake light is not working. I changed the bulb multiple times, checked the connector, and also checked the ground.when I use the brake on the handlebar I'm getting a 12 volt signal to the connector however the brake light will not turn on. when I use the foot brake I do not get any voltage whatsoever. I have ordered a new brake light switch for the foot brake but I am wondering why the bulb is not illuminating when I use the handbrake. would the foot brake switch not working cause the entire system to not work? or do I have an issue with the handbrake?

Are you checking the right part of the connector? You should be constant 12V for the running light, and then switched 12V for the brake light.

The hand brake and foot brake switches are independent. A broken will not affect the other.

With the key on I am getting 12 volts for the running light. When I use the hand brake I get 12 volts but the bulb will not light. I bought a wiring diagram for the bike so I know I am checking the correct wiring. Is the bulb a specific type? Or could it be an issue with the hand brake as well as the foot brake? Maybe not enough amps to power the light? At this point I am willing to try anything.

also I tried wiring in a set of LED lights I bought just to see what would happen when I hit the brake. when I hit the handbrake the LEDs would start to illuminate but when i pulled on the brake further the lights would stop working.

just curious.....do you have the bulb installed correctly? the little nibs on bulb correspond with slots in socket and they MUST line up correctly.

If the bulbs are good and ground is good then you have a +12V power issue. You stated that the LED illuminated and then stopped - my best guess is that the switch is on its last leg.

EDIT: Or a loose/broken connection/wire along the way.
