2005 XB12R wont change down from 4th to 3rd properly

Hi guy, looking at buying an 05 xb12r, the owners just done an engine rebuild and put it back together and now he's Having trouble changing down from 4th gear to 3rd.

He also reckons he's put the right oil in, that it was working fine before he took the engine out, that it gets worse after riding longer periods of time and that to make it change down through the gears he has to change up2 5th and then back down and then it works. He's also pretty sure he hasn't bent the selector fork either...

Has anybody heard of or encountered this problem before and have.any suggestions?cheers
 
only thing to do is pull it apart and inspect the transmission assembly. but it takes an experienced eye to see something causing a problem like that. could be a bent detent, fork could of got bent, or possibly have main/counter shaft scored.

how much is he selling for, and unless you are fairly mechanical have tools and losts of time, i wouldnt buy it.
 
Sounds most likely, even with a manual most people cant figure out how to secure the detent outta the way enough to re-assemble, resulting in bent detent.
 
bikes a good pirce, its about 2k under a good running price, but im over workng on bikes at the moment and am trying to work to a budget, dont mind taking it into someone who knows what they are doing and paying a little bit but dont want to pay for something like a whole transmission rebuild so just thought id ask around see what people think about the problem.

Where bouts and what exactly is the detent man? and how hard to fix ya rekon? guys dont have a manual diagram on hand either do yas so can have a better look at the tranny?

Its a lot of work. It requires cases the be split to access. Though the detent/neutral switch can be removed and possibly get a view of the detent to see if thats the problem.

I just sealed up my trans 2 days ago and am in the process of reinstalling it into the frame. Here is the detent spring. You have to move it out of the way to clear a way for the shift cam to go into it's bushing on the other side of the case it rides on the shift cam and helps keep it in gear when you shift. Usually the cases wont go together if you aren't able to move it out of the way. But he may of somehow been able to. In any case you are going to have to dig into the trans to find out the issue it can be anything from this being bent which you can just remove and hammer it back straight which is free to have shift fork/gear issues which could get expensive. The big thing is to go into the tranny is going to costs you if you don't do it yourself.
