Hello,

I'm about to order the spring compressor and primary lock bar so I can disassemble my clutch and take a look at the plates, shift return spring, detent screw and etc. I am using the service manual BTW. I am having a very hard time downshifting. I have to double tap the shifter, come to a stop or push down very hard to downshift from 4th on down. I would like to replace known wear items with recommended replacements. I am looking at many posts on this topic and at what vendors have to offer. Any advice out there before I spend some loot? Thank you for your time.

John

How many miles?

Start with primary fluid level, sounds low/high?
Then Shift shaft in primary side.

XB don't have trap doors like older tube frame bikes & sportster. So whole motor has to be torn down.
I hope you got a good deal or didn't get screwed.

As someone who has done them, if it's worse than that you don't want to mess with it. New trans can run $1000, plus gaskets & someone has to do the work

These trans don't have "normal wear". they are either maintained well, shifted properly to last indefinitely OR they are beat to crap shifting without clutch & usually bend/break a gear. There's no normal wear.

If it was a shift fork, it would have problem in one gear, not all going down.

hi john: the stock ulysses clutch is a very robust piece as is the stock transmission. when you're inside the primary with the primary cover removed check the clutch basket ears as well as the detent springs for signs of wear or looseness with the springs. also wiggle the clutch basket and check for looseness as it has a large needle bearing attaching it to input shaft and is a perishable. check all these items closely.
you must use a spring compressor tool to remove the pressure plate which gains access to the clutch pack. you do not need the primary locking tool(lock bar) in most instances as putting the bike in 1st gear and having someone press down on rear brake pedal usually suffices.
energy one makes a very nice complete clutch pack replacement kit....see link below. also board member 50dro (sandro) is a site sponsor, a great guy to deal with, and stocks these clutch kits on his site. see right sidebar for his site....5-0dro. also consider lubing your clutch cable when doing this work. use care with cable furrel that feeds into front of primary cover. it is quite fragile. lastly...when done consider 1 quart of amsoil 20-50 cycle oil in your primary. it works quite well, reasonably priced, and provides longevity as well as smooth shifting. hope that helps.
