This excites me. It's the motor that probably should have gone into the Nine-T to start with, with but I'm thrilled to see BMW finally got that new liquid-cooled flat twin into a naked bike!
 
I wonder how close the production bike will be to those pictures. Those are the concept pictures right? It looks really nice.
 
I absolutely love the pre-production look, however I feel the exhaust, subframe, and headlight are going to completely change - which is really most of the look of the bike. Oh - did the swingarm move to the left side on the newer R's?...it was on the right in previous years for the R bikes (mid 2000s).

As far as the power plant goes, I really enjoyed the motor in the R1200S I had for a few months. I can only think that watercooling will make the engine even more efficient.

As a side note: The S1000R is sexy as hell!
 
i'm on my 4th R model and bmw's, though quirky, truly are exceptional bikes. thank God they've standardized and "japped up" the handlebar controls in the last few years.

Ive loved that bike since i first saw it... if it stays as is that is going to be one badass bike.... hopefully they dont change it to much and screw up the looks.
 
I love the concept. I believe the production model will be drastically different however. Only complaint is how low and wide the engine sits. Definitely cornering concerns there.

Yea, that's a common criticism of boxer twin Beemers. I suggest it's not really a significant concern however. Even my old 1973 R75/5 gives me enough lean angle to pass even the spirited Harley guys on the outside line.

Just to test your hypothesis however, I pulled up that front image of the R1200R & held a protractor up to the screen. I'm showing ~55 deg lean angle which is shy of current litre bike standards by several degrees, but still beats my XB12Ss (with R pegs) by over 5 degrees.

Perhaps this vid of an HP2 Sport is convincing(?).
 
The R bikes, especially in S (R1200S and R1100S, HP2 Sport) trim have quite the lean angle for a boxer engine'd bike. Although I have to admit that I was never 100% comfortable leaning it over that far. They do have Carbon Fiber and even alum sliders available though to protect the valve covers.

In GS trim, the boxer engine offers the advantage of only falling 1/2 way over when dumped. That means less bike to pick back up!

Seriously though, when I took my GS off-road certification, we were taught to use the cylinder heads as pivot-points to rotate the bike around for u-turns in tight terrain!
