99 X1 Starting Issue

I just bought my 99 X1 over the weekend and sometimes when you turn the key the fuel pump will prime and sometimes it doesnt. When it does, the starter will only work sometimes. There is no clicking or anything when it doesnt work, just a dead button. It will however bump start easily. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

I had a similar issue with starting an I roll started it fine to. My issue was in the ignition block on my dash board. Take your wind screen off an check your wiring coming out from your ignition switch. . My be some corrosion or something. Hope this help. Good luck!

ya, did that and there is one bare wire that is running into the black connector by the head tube. is it supposed to be bare or do I need to rewire stuff?

If it's bare then that might be your problem. My ignition finally went and took a shit. I ordered a new ignition. It should be in tomorrow.

There should not be bare wire anywhere?!? If that is not the root of your problem... Ignition switches have been known to fail on x1's. Sounds like that could be the problem.

American Sportbike sells an updated heavy duty switch that is cheaper than the HD part.

After riding for a while reach behind your dash and pinch the wires coming out of the back of the ign switch with your fingers. If they are hot the switch should be replaced.

Mine gets warm but I have been told they get super hot and the contacts in the switch will burn out.

i just got my ignition from american sport bike, fast shipping an worth it. wiring was really easy. the only tricky part is that it isnt an exact fit into the stock hole on the dash board. a little filing an it works ill try an get some pics

Your ignition relay is bad. Simple fix.
