I'm planning on a ride with some buds tomorrow. For those who know southern cal, it's from Palm Springs to Old Town Temecula. It's probably and hour and 45 maybe... depending on our pace. We'll be going up over "the mountain" (74, 376, etc). My Ninja is out of commission due to a coolant leak. Not serious, but I need to get a new hose clamp and it's too late in the day to finish the job. So.... finally, the 'bolt gets a chance to be ridden up into the mountains instead of the usually short trips she goes on. She's still throwing a code 33 but I'm not seeing any problem with the way she's running. I have another ECM and still I'm figuring out ECM Spy (I'm a slow learner) but that's all gonna have to wait because she's the star tomorrow. I hope I don't regret this - LOL! "Check engine" light be damned! I, Just in case, I'm upgrading my triple A tonight.

Plug the bike into the computer, open ecmspy, put into professional mode. Have the bike on and set to run, have ecmspy autodetect the cable, clear codes. Code 33 is fuel pump

Thanks- I'm going to try to reset the error code before I take it out. I was hung up on the cable - I thought I either had to configure it and/or download a driver. I meant to type "code 53", not "33". 53 is "ECM failure" but I've had the bike out on a lot of short trips across town and a 20 mile ride a few weeks ago and other than the check engine light coming on, it seems perfectly normal. This has been going on a couple of months and 53 keeps coming up when I pull the codes. I am planning on swapping out the ECM but how can it be a failure condition if the bike is running fine?

Hmmm... So I put ECM Spy into professional mode. Bike is totally off. I plug cable into computer USB port, then into bike. I click OPTIONS, COMMUNICATIONS. A small window called INTERFACE OPTIONS opens. I click on AUTODETECT. Another window opens that says to connect the plug, switch ignition on and toggle kill switch on. I do that and click OK. It displays "testing COM port1", "testing COM port3" and "testing COM port4" then says "failed to get COM port". I tried reseating the connector (which seems to fit perfectly) and three different USB ports on the computer and it doesn't make a difference. Anybody know what I should do next?

Have you installed the cable driver?

Bike is totally off
And the ignition needs to be on with the kill switch in run after you connect the cable and before you open ecmspy, "autodetect com" and toggle the "connect" button

I ran out of time yesterday - couldn't get the Ninja back together and couldn't work through this connect issue with the Firebolt. I think I just didn't download the cable driver. I was going to clear the code 53 on the current ECM but what I really need to do is get the replacement one installed (again) and adjust the TPS relative to it. I'll have to do that around my work schedule this week.

So as not to miss the ride, I did end up taking the 'bolt and the check engine light did come on a few times. She ran great though.... not even a hint of a problem, so no need to cal AAA! I've had this bike a couple months shy of two years and that was the first time I've had it up in the mountains. Kinda funny having it for so long and working on it so I'm very familiar with it mechanically but never experienced what it's actually capable of. I was amazed at what it can do - not that I'm skilled enough to take it anywhere near its limits. I can only compare it to the Ninja because that's what I know. Obviously it has more power, but I in awe of how well it seemed to stick to the road. It seemed much more planted and stable than the Ninja. It goes into turns almost automatically with less effort. It made me look like a better rider than I am - LOL! I'll be even more of a happy camper after I work through this ECM/check engine light deal.

Back to the ECM spy challenge... somehow I downloaded the cable driver. I'm not sure if it was from the CD or from the internet because I tried both but I'm no computer wizard. Well, the program works. It connected to ECM and I cleared the trouble codes. I was so excited that it worked that I can't remember if the code 53 was there or not. I remember the code for the IAT sensor was there but I changed that yesterday. There was also a code for the speedo sensor but I replaced that a while back. I didn't do anything else. I'm in the early stages of learning how to use this program, so I don't want to push my luck. I'm riding tomorrow so I'll see if the ECM throws another code. I still have the replacement I can install. Since I don't understand much about what I'm looking at, here's a pic of the screen shot (I had to go through a dozen steps to get it from the old PC in the garage to my Mac and convert it to a jpg). The bike was completely cold and has not been run for two days. It has a Drummer exhaust and K&N air filter. Airbox is stock. Thanks for everyone's help... you got me this far. If anyone can shed some light on this info, that would good!
