Hey everyone! This is my first post here and I had a couple quick questions that hopefully are not too inconvenient. I just bought a Buell XB12R with 9k miles. It runs like a champ but needed a service so I changed the oil and pulled the filter and it looked horrible. I put a K&N filter in it and it has D&D exhaust as well. My local Harley shop said it would be fine to run just the filter and exhaust without a new ECM or tune. I was curious if anyone had any helpful input or suggestions. Anything is much appreciated.

Thanks.

The general consensus on here is that the ECMs can tolerate either an exhaust or an intake mod... But not both without a tune without running pretty lean... But that's just gathering information from threads on here... As in have yet to start tuning my 9er...

You may be OK if it already had an ECM tune for the D&D as the 09's and up will "learn" to a certain degree. But with a free flowing intake & exhaust on a stock ECM you will need to tune the ECM as she will be running awfully lean. I definitely wouldn't run it too much or too hard until you have the chance to make adjustments to the fuel maps.
Welcome to the forum!

Thanks a lot guys. Its a 2006, but if it has a stock ECM with the exhaust and filter it will need a tune then correct? If I dont want to tune it, is there any place I can buy a stock buell filter? The K&N was all I could seem to find.

My opinion, the money spent on a Tuniversity or Xopti tune is money well spent. Your bike will run better, cooler, and have more power.

I run a Jardine, K&N, and stock ECM. Runs fine. I did not do an open air box mod, I just swapped a K&N for a stock filter, but NO open airbox with the Jardine

Minimal popping but never had a problem for over a year

I also run the jardine cf, k&n, stock ecm, but i did open up the air box. That was 10,000 miles ago and havent had an issue. Runs like a champ with popping i can control wich i actually enjoy. An I ride it very aggresivly, daily.

I'd say at least flash the race map to the stock ecm, Its not a custom tune, but It'll get you closer to where you need to be. You can check the ECM to be sure is the stock one. Its under your front fairing. The race ones will say "for race use only." Its its stock, you can buy the race ecm or get a race map flashed to your stock ecm.

+1 for Max and the Tuniversity if you're looking to get the most out of your bike. He can help you with the flash, Datalog set up (Recording your data using the street rides instead of a dyno) and the tuning. He can work with you online. The tuning process can be somewhat complex and do some unwanted damage if you're not sure what you're doing so its good to have someone walk you through it. (No offense to Xopti, of course. I've only worked with Max before.)
