I have always thought the Buell's were very cool bikes, but I could never justify purchasing one...I have always been a big dirt rider and did not want to spend money on a street bike at the expense of my dirt hobby. Well, I came across a 2005 XB12R with 2600 miles on it for 4500. Too good to be true? Almost. It is a clean bike, never dropped and no mechanical issues, runs like a champ. I went to look at the bike and decided to ride it the 160 miles in the rain to my in-laws as I was on vacation without my truck. The original owner removed the muffler because he liked the way it sounded. He lost all the mounting hardware, but still had the muffler. He also painted the entire bike camo....definately not my thing. I fabbed up some temporary muffler mounts and ordered the mounting parts I need. PO also removed and lost all the active exhaust stuff. So I wired the muffler open and rode it 500 miles home, also ordered the cable and software from Ebay to turn off the light. The bike is just awesome, but I need to paint it in the worst way. It is a shame that he painted the frame and covered up the beautiful dark color. Does anyone know what that coating is? I would love to chemically strip the frame and try to save the original color, but I think I may be out of luck. I am planning to cut the muffler open and gut it, then ad my own baffles, does anyone know if that makes it outrageously loud? My biggest issue is the paint, any good tips on removing the paint from the frame and plastic? I am busting out the sand paper tonight!

yes it does

Not sure about your other concerns but, Welcome to the Forum and Buell Madness ;)[up]

I will take some pics tonight. Really, most people tell me the paint is not that bad, but I am in the Army and the last thing I want is more camo! I like the basic black which would go well with my gold wheels, but I think I might try blue. Anyone have good luck with good rattle can on the plastic?

If you hate the camo enough do the spray can thing for now then get a good paint job later.Enjoy the bike while the weather is good...

In all it's glory!

I must say it is kinda sick of a paint job but again I too look at camo all the time so yes if I had to ride it like this she would have already been in the paint shop lol...at least the wheels aren't painted :). If you wanted to shell out the cash to get new plastics its like right around 600 for everything...just a thought.

I am going to try painting in myself. I was thinking black for the frame and tan for the plastics, kind of a semi gloss or satin finish. I am testing a metalic blue on the chin fairing, it's a nice color, but I am not sure if it fits the bikes image, too friendly if that makes sense.

I seen a camo shirt once that said "Ha now you cant see me" you should get and wear it when on the bike.

other than the not so cute paint job. The bike has a few mods already done to it in which are nice.

Such as the headers are already wrapped and look to be done nice and tight.

The belt guards and chin fairings have all been removed.

The rear fender has also been moded or DIY Tail eliminator mod.

Lastly from what I can see the reflectors have been removed as well.

If there is anything else I am missing sorry, well it is camoflauged [confused]
