Planning a trip from Vancouver to San Francisco or maybe LA this summer. All along the coast (or at least as much as possible, and as a goonies fan, im excited to visit Astoria). Any warnings pertaining to law enforcement? Heads-up or recommendations? Here in Edmonton there is a new motorcycle noise bylaw (250$ fine for my special ops last summer).

The cops in Washington are pretty cool...they don't bother you to much for exhaust. Just keep the speed and the front wheel down. Good luck on your trip, keep us posted on when you leave and where you are. Maybey we could get a few buells together along the way.

are you leaving from edmonton or vancover? edmonton is gonna be a long ass ride. i'm in the seattle area, you should post when you leave and maybe some of the puget sound area buellers could meet up with you. good chioce taking the coast, I-5 down to cali. sux.
(what XB12 said lol)

Are you taking 101? Taken that route on the Buell and auto a few times. Let us know, as stated above - maybe some of us can meet up, or at least say hi.

Oregon resident here - You wont get a ticket for 5 MPH over the speed limit. Helmets are required too. Drivers are not very aware of riders... Astoria bridge is beautiful! Ill post up the spot where they filmed The Goonies looking at the rocks in the ocean.....

By the time you hit CA you can now lane split woohoo! People are more aware of riders too.
Thats a longgggggg ride!! Be safe and make sure you are up to date on maintenance.

CA is pretty clear sailing for bikes as long as you keep it under 80. If you get down to the Monterey area, let me know, we can meet up.

Thanks guys..
We may skip Van in favor of a shorter trip to
Seattle.
Would love to meet up for a tour with
any local guys along the way.
Onelogue - would love pics.
I'm pretty excited for this. As plans finalize,
I'll post some more here.
Please keep tips/advice coming. It's all appreciated.

Dont believe what they say about WA being OK. The Washington state patrol is one of the worst police agencies in the country when it comes to motorcycle profiling( there is legislation being passed right now to stop motorcycle profiling in WA )

Oregon/Cali aint bad at all, but I would watch your P's and Q's in WA, The Wastapo are a revenue generating agency.

Hi Buck-Going around the Olympic peninsula and through the Olympic National Park on Highway 101 is pretty neat. This loop takes you to the Astoria Bridge over the Columbia River. Word of caution: When you are within the borders of the Olympic National Park go the speed limit. The cops there are badge heavy Federal Smoky Bear type Rangers trying to pay off the National Debt. While in the park you can take a side trip up Hurricane Ridge and look across the Straight of Juan de Fuca towards Victoria.

Don’t know where you’ll be entering Washington State but if it is in Western Washington you have several options for getting to the Olympic Peninsula.

The most scenic in my opinion is to take I-5 South to Route 20 in Burlington. Head west over Deception Pass to Whidbey Island, (Deception Pass is well worth seeing). Continue on 20 to Coupeville, (Keystone) and take the Keystone to the Pt. Townsend ferry. From Pt. Townsend follow the signs to Highway 101.

One way Ferry fare on this run for a Motorcycle and Driver is $4.10. Passengers are $2.75.

I like several other Buellers would be more than happy to go riding with you. Let me know if you would like to meet up. My e-mail address is [email protected].

$4.10 one way on the Washington State Ferry from Whidbey Island, (Coupeville) to Pt. Townsend for a Motorcycle and Driver.

What is so expensive about that?

What Ferry are you thinking of?

I would imagine your crossing at the peace arch crossing and then slabbing it down to Portland and then taking the 101 at least through Oregon and Northern Cali(The best parts of the 101) down into the bay area, then slab it to LA after that if you plan on going any further.

You dont wanna be on the 101 during commute hours in SoCal.

The 101 down into the bay and back would be an awesome trip alone, and take plenty of time if you do some proper exploring ;) .

I for one love the roads up in BC [up] My wife went to school in Vancouver and those are seriously some of my favorite roads ever.

Have fun and good luck! Pack smart!

My major concern is trying to cross the border after them hearing us for an hour before we get there! (my buddy has an R1 and rides it like an R1) LOL!!

Iv crossed the peace arch quite a few times on my Buell. The one memorable time was sitting on my bike going back into the US, getting questioned by some bald BPA covered in tatoos telling my I was too young to be able to afford a Buell and then proceeded to search through my backpack while it was still on my back...

Fun times.

What Ferry are you thinking of?

being a former island boy I can say from practical experience that any ferry to get off Vancouver Island with a motorcycle is costly
$22.90 one way and with that you have to pay $13.75 as a passenger fee.
so double that up its going to cost you $73.30 to get off and then back on..
take into account gas and any food you may eat and a day of rding turns into a $200 affair...(I have done it several times)

If you have a pick up car/truck the cost goes up accordingly $45.75 one way(with 1 person in vehicle, additional peeps cost $13.75 per person other then driver)
If its an oversize vehicle, cha-ching..more $$$$$
(our average cost in our truck was aboot $130 to get off and then back on, before the cost of gas....)
I don't know aboot most of you but that is expensive to us...[sad]

...and the roads/riding on the mainland are pretty sweet and thanks to destination highways dot com I was able to ride all the roads on the island pretty much year round (south/central island) and have this seasons rides already picked out!
:D

I was on the island for the first time last summer.
Mini vacation with my wife and 3yr old daughter.
So beautiful. Reminded me of home (NB, Bay of Fundy).
All I could think about was my bike.
I go to Van from time to time through work.
Next time I'm headed there I'll ride there for sure!
