So the bike died on me the other day.. luckily the street i was on was only a few blocks from home and downhill [up]

I traced the issue back to corrosion build up on the terminals, but while i was cleaning them off i noticed a lot of damage from arcing :

question is could this be from some greater problem? or is likely from the build up? also do i need to replace the battery immediately or is it more cosmetic damage?

i applied some dielectric grease after cleaning the terminals off and the bike fired right up, but i did notice a few coughs on the way to school this mourning (though it could have been paranoia..)

These beast coughs a spits all the time. That looks cosmetic make sure both are right and also the ground to the bike frame. As long as the battery is holding keep moving.

They should be fine - I would give them a light file to clean the faces up and also clean the corresponding face on the connectors with something like a fine brass brush.
Connect and tighten the connectors and then apply the dielectric grease if you must. Remember it is designed to be an insulator (hence the name dielectric) so if you get it between the face of the battery terminal and the electrical connector it will actually reduce the conducting surface area.
Make sure the bolts aren't too long as there have been several folk report bolts being slightly too long and they bottom out and appear to be a firm connection but the actual cable isn't firmly held. An added washer under the bolt head will solve this one.

ahah! apply After reconnecting them... i guess i need to go clean off my terminals and re-apply tomorrow then :D
lol thanks [up]
