Wanting to make my XB12 just cleaner looking and want to eliminate the belt guards. I have been looking thru tons of pics on here and find a lot with them on a lot off, some with the just the lower on and some with just the upper.
My question is to the guys that don’t have them on at all have you had any issues with road debris or any issues after you took them off period?
IMO it just looks cleaner without them on!

Do it looks so much better. I only run the bottom cause I live about a quarter mile down a gravel road and I still fear a little about a rock or something getting in the bottom part and messing up the belt. I constantly come home with little pebbles on the back part of the seat from them getting tossed up. Havent had a problem yet. Kinda thinking of removing the bottom. Anyone live on a gravel road have a problem with the bottom removed?

Personnally, I wouldn't do it, JMO, 175 bucks for a belt and being stranded is not an option just for some vanity

Theres literally millions of dirty harley riders that dont run belts and some without covers on their primary belts. I see it as a non-issue.

I live on a few miles of gravel/chip and seal, I still have both guards. I was worried about a little rock destroying the belt too. Although i do think it does look better without em, that seems like an expensive way to enjoy a small appearance upgrade, for me anyways

If I ever do move to more motorcycle friendly roads, they're coming off tho :D

both look good, I prefer off. I don't think you should see any problems as long as you have the post 03 belt setup

i've had mine off since i bought it pretty much and have had a rock or something come in and my belt did break. never found the belt it flew off in some random unknown direction. but i wont put em bak on i like how it looks without em.

everyone makes a good point on both on or off options ..

myself , both belt guards off for about a year+ and no problems.. but I do routinely Inspect my buell alot . and do my best to avoid sand gravel small and large , but sometimes it maybe almost impossible to miss every little rock , but if your thinking you might bust a belt then buy one or two extra to have just in case. heck i would like to have an extra belt anyways so when or if it ever breaks i dont have to wait for it to get shipped or possibly pay a higher price in years to come.

I was thinking about taking mine off too, can you do it without removing the rear wheel? or the pulley?

just a few torx bolts to remove. I leave mine on so pass. doesnt loose there pants and bcuz i do enjoy a good romp down a rock road now and then but if u just street ride 1 up. goo 4 it. just save the parts!

Been riding mine w/o guards for a few years now...no problems! (fingers crossed!:p )

Is there any other way to ride besides totally NAKED? I'm on my 5th riding season(32,000 miles on belt)riding the Buell and I have not had one issue since I took mine off. I agree though, if you ride anywhere besides all pavement, you better leave them on.

dmp0001 and 50dro,

Good looking bikes! I have been thinking about getting another buell, lightning this time. Looking at your bikes I think I like the idea. Good looking bikes fellas!!!

Thanks Rusty! Don't forget about the front cover as well! (sorry for the shameless plug ;) )
