So here lately I have noticed that driving my bike at night my headlights dim when I let off the throttle. Then today while sitting at light, I tried to take off, the bike sputtered out and died on me. Tried to start it back up and the gauge cluster isn't even working. The speedo needle jumps up then back down but none of the lights come on or anything. I did get caught in a bad storm about 3 weeks ago so I am think something got wet and finally gave out.

I am going to check the battery first to make sure it is good but not sure what to check after that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is a 2006 xb12ss lightning.

Thanks in advance!

Download the service manual and start reading through the electrical troubleshooting. Of course check the battery first if it tests out charge it back up and see if it runs again. If so Id suspect your stator or VR

Definitely check your battery. Might be something as simple as the terminals being loose. If those are good and tight then get your battery tested. A dead or dying battery will do some strange things in out bikes.

Thanks for the help!

Finally got a chance to look at it and do you know, loose battery terminal.

Walked out to my bike which had the seat off and thought well let me see if it does anything. Put the key in, turn it to on, all the lights come on so then I start it. I stand there a little confused. Go to put the seat back on and the bike shuts down and all the lights go off. Pull the seat off, all the lights come back on. Started the bike again, poked the negative battery cable and the bike dies. Found the problem, tightened it up and it is good to go. Glad it was something so simple.

Yup, everytime I change the oil I put a 10mm socket on the battery terms to make sure they are not loose. Every bolt I take off i use loctite blue when putting back on, except you cannot use that on the battery. Also use a smart charger on the battery for every time I park the bike for more than a few days, or if I do not ride on the weekends I will plug it in Sunday night to make sure it is good for commuting Monday morning.
